You do realize that the core vaccines last a lifetime, don't you?
Say "ensure previous pets were given adequate veterinary care" but "up to date on vaccinations" shows how unqualified you are to judge.

We ask if they are up to date on shots & heartworm prevention
Part of the adoption contract is saying you will get yearly rabies vaccinations & keep the dog on heart worm prevention

What an idiotic statement following your little rant about how expensive everything is. Considering the alternative is death or to be caged at some shelter indefinitely, you would think these rescues would stop with their sanctimonious bullshite and work to actually get these dogs adopted instead of holding people to unrealistic standards in order to stroke their own egos.

Purebreds are adopted at a much faster pace than mixed breeds. Charging more for something more in demand is basic economics. It also helps pay for the mixed breeds and older dogs to have a shelter longer than they would normally due to upcharge on purebreds providing capital to invest in larger facilities.

Why is this hard for people to understand.

My aunt and uncle adopted a dog years ago. It was a puppy and they told them it would be "mid medium" size. And well.. they were wrong. It was a mixed breed that ended up being a big dog. It looked like it had lab, rottweiler.. maybe some german shepard with some type of terrier.

My uncle refuses to ever adopt a dog again because the dog was huge and hyper. And it wouldn't bark at anything until it was gone so it wasn't a good watch dog. And she would chase bugs outside and jump into the flowerbed but because she was so big she messed up everything.

Oh.. And I think by "mid medium" they meant it was going to be on the small side of medium... according to my uncle.. And he swears they make up stuff about the dogs.

If you want to rescue a dog, you can get one for $35 at the shelter. It sounds like you’re looking for a discounted puppy.

Where did I say anything about the cost to adopt the dog? That’s not what I’m talking about. I don’t give a frick what these rescues charge to adopt. The point is they’re not being adopted out because the rescues place unrealistic standards own potential owners and deny their applications. Then they hop on social media to beg for donations and brag about how righteous they are.

frick them.

I’m looking at our 3 rescues, all from BR area organizations, none were expensive, and we had none of the hassles so many have expressed. Our latest was an Ida foster we took from CAA when they got all the evacuees from down south, and we kept him because he was such an awesome dog.

I got my last three dogs from people who just didn't want their dogs cause of divorce or something else. Two I had to pay for heart worms which aint cheap. Just ask around they are out there or go to pound.

So why on earth won't rescues let a family with a child (8 at the time) adopt a small or medium dog???

My wife and I went and met the dogs, then we brought or son to make sure he was good with the dogs, then we brought our current dog to make sure everyone got along. The rescue let us waste all this time knowing all along they were not going to let us adopt this dog because we had a kid.

Ok. You rescue a cavalier from a mill. The dog never had a dental. At least $200 right there. You notice eyes draining. Turns out there is a condition and dog needs drops. More cost to rehab before adopting out. Might have heartworms. Never was fixed. Might have a luxating patella and need surgery. See how it adds up quick?

I got a call a week or so ago from an agency doing a background check for a rescue.

I’d probably fail that same background check but yet my street cat is living the high life. From drainage ditch to a life of luxury.

I tried to adopt a dog back in November from a rescue org in New Orleans. I didn’t mind the benefactor dog price as buying from a breeder would have been double that amount. The issue I had was the application process. frick that shite. They asked for everything and a drop of blood.

We’ve never owned a dog so I knew our app would be trashed. We ended buying from a breeder

I honestly have no clue
We do everything we can to be up front about any issues
All of my fosters go to my parents to see how they do with other dogs, I have my friend swing by with his kids & I’ve gone to the shelter for a “cat test” for an interested family that had cats
With one of my fosters I prayed for someone with an 8 year old little boy, it would have been a match made in heaven, she ended up going to a home with no kids but with a younger dog that needed a companion

I got turned down for a jack Russell terrier. Said my four foot fence that backed up to the golf course was insufficient. Said if I built a 6 foot fence the obstructed my and my neighbors view of the course they'd reconsider.

We had a much better experience. Went with my daughter to look at rescue dogs. We went on one of the days they bring the dogs and cats to Pet Smart. She found a dog that had been one of like 20 dogs rescued from a trailer.

The lady was telling my wife and daughter that the dog was not good with men when I walked up and he was great with me right away. The person that worked for the shelter was asking about a fenced in yard, which we don't have - we live in a mostly fenceless neighborhood where everyone gets along.

Luckily, the lady who was fostering the dog was there and spoke up saying this particular dog didn't care for the outside much.

The dog was a great match with my daughter. She takes him outside for plenty of walks and he is a great dog for her.

I'm guessing the different "rescues" vary widely in how reasonable they are and how stringent their requirements are. I can see them wanting to know basic info to make sure they dog will be in a decent situation, but I'm sure some of them can go overboard sometimes.
