Does the military ruin people or make them more of a man/woman?

I'm guessing it depends what branch they were in or what they've been through. It's sad seeing people I know going in a positive person and coming out on drugs/being an alcoholic/suicidal. But, some people I know come out being a great person, very mature and with great futures.
What have you experienced yourself or with family/friends that have been in the military
And may God bless our troops and Merry Christmas to our troops

50/50 in my experience.

You ever think that maybe it doesn’t have as much to do with the military as it does society as a whole? I mean plenty of people go to college and become addicts and kill themselves too. Should we start a thread about how college fricks people up?

It'll push you in whichever direction you're naturally inclined.
If you're smart and driven you rise up the ranks pretty quickly or secure employment outside of the military after first or second term. Those are the success stories.
If you're naturally lazy and a malcontent you'll group up with other like-minded souls in the military who hate everything about their lives and blame it on the military. Those are the ones with bleak post military futures.
What I saw a lot of was people who joined because they had no direction in life (enlisted). They didn't take advantage of education and career opportunities and separated with no prospects and no plan. They work odd jobs for the rest of their lives.
I also saw a few people go on to become miserable lifers, and a handful more get out and dive into lucrative, successful career.
Again this was all enlisted. Officer side probably has a much different experience. Air Force.

Depends in the service. Everyone I know who went Marines comes back changed for sure. Navy and Air Force no change really.

USMC straightened my arse out. God Bless the Corps.

Let’s say you go in the military with no direction, screw up etc. More times than not that’s who you associate with in the military, the people that change separate from the formate lifestyle but they are low in percentage. Army.

The military has as many good folks and bad folks as normal society. In most cases, it'll mirror society at large.
The difference is when you drop a young and impressionable kid in a terrible situation, for extended periods, surround him with a tight knit unit facing something the larger population has no idea about.
Bring that kid home, wave a flag in his face, give him a mil discount a Lowes, and cut him loose to cope with the last year of his life in isolation from what he just experienced. It's not that easy and we need to do more for these guys.

There is also a huge stigma with seeking help. Once you do that you are blackballed for the most part. Look up worst jobs in America and military enlisted soldier in always on the top 5

This seems to be my experience as well.

I lost focus before joining and ended up leaving college. The Marines put me back on track to where I now have a Master's degree. It also gave me confidence that I lacked in the past. I would have shite myself if I had to talk in front of a few people before the Marines, but I routinely gave briefs in front of 100+ while in and I am now a good public speaker.
For every success story, there are just as many, if not more, stories of people getting out and not changing or getting worse though.

It isn't so much the military that does it one way or the other. It's usually the individual person. Everybody is different so, as another poster said, it depends.
My father and I are LSU, and both retired/former officers. My older brother is West Point, and is a retired officer. All three of us were Combat Arms branches, and all three of us seemed to turn out OK.
P.S.: None of us were ever LEO or cops either.

Its all about the bucket. Grandpappy said,"You get out of life what you put in your bucket". If you go into the military without a bucket,or if you bucket has holes in the bottom ,you may have a problem. If you join with a positive attitude, have a desire to learn and advance, then you bucket will over flow. Army, Merry Christmas.

Sure seemed to have a positive influence on our son.
No longer serves but is a civilian in assisting/supporting role for the military.

I can’t speak for the the internal happenings of the military as I am not a vet, but of the guys I know who served, those who went overseas to war zones all seem to have some serious issues, though they hide it well. Those who went in and spent four years bouncing around military bases in the US and peaceful areas all seem to be happy and on a much better track in life.

This country would be a lot better if everyone was mandated to do at least 2 years service. Would be much more respect towards each other.
