The elf on the shelf is the equivalent of the NSA for 7 year olds. It is a direct stab against freedom.

We didn't have an Elf on the shelf to keep us from misbehaving.

We had a Belt on the shelf.

So my little girl looses her first tooth. She's pretty pumped about the tooth fairy coming like he's done for her brother several times. She and her brother go to talking about it and we over hear them talking about what if the tooth fairy and Blue (thier name for their Elf) run into each other. A pretty funny conversation ensues between them. That night my wife came up with this:

Next morning was awesome

Is that a Cajuns jersey your elf is wearing?

Elf on the Shelf represents the patriarchy and indoctrinates young girls to believe it's acceptable to have a man watching your every move.

He's a rapist.

I will never have that creepy thing in my house. Instead, I have this watching my daughter as she sleeps:

Do you go in several times a night and move him closer to her bed while she is sleeping?

Yep. In honor of the Tooth Fairy coming we dress the elf up like a fairy.

Honestly I have no idea

My kid loves that fricking elf. To be honest, I love trying to put it in crazy spots and positions just to see if he will get a laugh out of it.

Remember, Santa know when you are sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows when you're bad or good so be good for goodness sake.......

How big brother and creepy is that.

I'm with Kracka. My kids flies out of the bed every mourning to look for Pierre. We don't really use it as a "he's watching you" thing. That's what the back of my hand is for.

Yeah why would any parent spend any time thinking about the stuff they fill their kids heads with?

This is coming from a society that sees nothing wrong with sticking 6 year old boys in a desk for 8 hours a day, though, so it's not surprising that critical thought isn't going into the traditions we create out of thin air.
