re: Does LSU not give a crap about smart, in-state high school students?

In state gets tops. That’s about it. My daughter is a senior at LSU. She graduated high school with almost a 4.0, 29 on ACT and also 21 hours towards her bachelors degree at LSU. All she got was tops. Her roommate who is from Boston got full ride and didn’t have better grades than her.

My nephew is a senior who got a 35 on act, straight A honor student, national merit scholar, won a National beta competition and on his hs robotics team that won some scholarships. He received full rides+ from La Tech, ULM, ULL, Bama, Ms St and Texas A&M. Southeastern only offered him a little something and so far nothing from LSU. It is absolutely crazy.

He could probably get a full ride at LSU, I did with a 34 and I had a lot of Bs

That’s what I understand. Parents used to complain LSU didn’t offer much to locals, but out of state sent full on scholarships. I guess lsu prefers foreigners and out of state, so offer those students scholarships. TOPs helps, some.

they are enrolling more lucrative OOS students
One of my kids scored a 1490 on the SAT on his only attempt for which he did not even prepare, and was ranked high enough in the class to get auto-accepted at UT in Austin. Every day, the mailbox would have at least 2 or 3 mailers from schools from Harvard to UT Dallas. LSU sent their first mailer in the Spring of senior year.
LSU didn’t even try for this lucrative OOS student.

Things seem to have changed since my day. And I don’t mean the absence of dinosaurs…

Would colleges overlook certain demographics to force them to go out of state (OOS) so they can bring in students from OOS to get the OOS tuition?

LSU didn't offer much to locals when I was in high school...unless you were the right color. Almost 40 years later and the tradition continues.

I purposely sent my kids to other in state schools. While I love LSU sports, I refuse to have my kids indoctrinated or bent to the will of sociopaths.

This - years ago. Same situation. Use it to get him out of this cesspool.

My 10th grader (straight As, all AP and Honors classes, etc.) took the ACT last summer and got a 34.
I have 2 sons. One graduated from a state university last December. My youngest son is currently attending an IvyPlus school that is ranked in the US News Top 10. I have been through it all when it comes to college admissions. Feel free to hit me up with any questions.
If your kid got a 34 on the ACT before the 10th grade started, this is someone that (with some focused prep) could be at the 35/36 act range next year (and likely a 1550+ in the SAT).
There are only a small number of career paths in which it really matters where you get your college degree. However, those are VERY lucrative career paths. You child is someone that should be swimming in those waters.
LSU should not be on this student's radar. You have a couple of years to start making financial moves to pay for this child to attend a highly selective university.

Not even close especially when you add room and board it hits about 30K which is better than 50-75 k private out of state
AL, Au and Om give out best and brightest better opportunities.

Nope. Don’t give a shite about in state kids who have high scores. They say TOPS makes up the difference (bullshite).
Both my kids were National Merit finalists and made 36 and 35 ACT ‘s. Got full rides out of state. LSU gave them not even a reach around.

if my kid had those numbers, I’d desire for him to go ahead and get a foothold somewhere other than Louisiana.
They all go look at Ole Miss, Arky, and Aggie for SEC schools. Baylor, TCU and a hodgepodge of small east coast schools get their attention

Every school seems to prefer the more lucrative out of state students. That is just the business now

Problem is the tops level is so low you have to spread the bucket of money and not reward significantly (which they should) the students like your son….other states are more selective on their target students and can throw larger amounts at them..
Then there is the out of state bump they all play to get more money per student.. even if it is from a scholarship fund.. university get more money for same effort put on a student…
Also when he decides on area of concentration and visits the departments ( ie math.. eng…etc).. with scores like that they will probably start talking to him about preferred scholarships they hold back for students going into specific areas…
Be proactive in looking for additional target scholarships.. those are the ones that often are from a very rich alumni and can be significant..

This. Other states are rolling out the red carpet for our best and brightest. Full ride scholarships and stipends. Those same students still end up with a bill at LSU.
Also , the amount of money other states are pouring into their universities is night and day compared to what Louisiana is doing with its schools.

If your kid has a 34 act, the only SEC schools he should consider are Vanderbilt, UT & maybe UGA
You’d be doing him a disservice to send to lsu
