Yes.

Most people don’t want to be in this shithole unless they have a reason. In my case it’s family and a ton of acreage.

Unless you like to hunt and fish (which some docs definitely do, I’d imagine most don’t), there’s nothing to do in this state compared to most other places.

And the only aspect of low cost of living here is housing.

Insurance is outrageous
Sales tax is stupid
Power is insanely high
Infrastructure is shite

This state isn’t so bad if you’ve never lived literally anywhere else.

The doctors leave because Jeff Landry made it illegal to do abortions and give puberty blockers. That’s all doctors do nowadays

I say let em leave

I know this, my primary care doctor I used to have was awesome. Dude up and moved away and was replaced by a dude from India who graduated from this school in India.

Sad that they treat their healthcare heroes like this

I wonder why MD Anderson sends some of their patients to St Tammany in Covington?

I wouldn’t read all that much into this. MD Anderson has partnerships with medical groups in several states. They do that with East Jefferson in Metairie( or whatever it’s called now).
There is a good cancer research facility in Nola.

Medical care in Louisiana is awful
Why do you think people have to go out of state for certain procedures and medical care

Just like every other part of this disgusting state, the corrupt political system has destroyed medical education.

When I graduated I went to Alexandria for residency and moving out of state to start my practice wasn’t even a thought. I wanted to come home.

They opened a DO school in Monroe claiming it would help the area. They graduated the first class and almost every single kids high tailed it from North Louisiana to somewhere else for residency.

cancer research/cancer treatment, Louisiana is pretty close to the bottom

What data do you have to back that statement up?

I found Mary Bird on par with any of the top clinics in Scottsdale cancer centers, and treatment protocols were virtually identical. In fact the LA. oncologist was more forward-thinking and aggressive with treatment recommendations.

I can't speak to research, as I haven't studied that.

Honestly, everyone shares data and research now so there's no excuse for getting top-tier care anywhere.

As always, you have to be or have your own advocate

Actually MD salaries are pretty high here, only way to attract them.

Payer mix is terrible but with the majority of docs on salary now it doesn't matter

Many more liberal students have started coming. This was told to me by someone who works for the LSU system. It’s really sad. They know these kids are coming from out of state just to go to med school and then will leave to go back to other states to practice.

Good, we don’t want those liberals, right?

Depends on the cancer. NOLA has one of the best breast cancer centers in the country.

Here in Texas new medical schools were built recently in Huntsville and Tyler for the express purpose of training physicians for rural/smaller city areas. Louisiana should build a medical school in Lafayette for this purpose. Having grown up in Louisiana it seemed LSU wanted to control the output of MDs through the two schools. Building a new school in Laffy connected to the University of Louisiana system would make sense. Things change. The world grows. (And the Tulane system doesn't factor into this discussion here.)

They absolutely do.

People come from all over the world to go to SCSH.

Fans of socialized medicine should sit in their waiting room for a few hours and see who comes in, and from where.

They are starting more, but they didn’t even hang around the one residency that exists. I think like one kid went there.

Just for example for my specialty and MGMA data:
Ochsner pays 12-15th percentile.

Move to the north shore, thibodaux, more underserved areas and I'd finally hit 50-60th percentile.

If I were to move to Dallas, Houston; I would be making 50-60th from the start.

Yes indeed, Mr. Gaucho. We should all do the gay arse Texas Longhorn dance fundraiser on TikTok and raise money for a new hospital system in Louisiana.
