what was the reasoning?
The bed make a sort of air bubble that makes the air go over the tailgate. With the tailgate down there’s no bubble and the air forces straight down on the bed, causing drag

Gate up and windows closed. That’s what my on board computer says.

So tailgate down for extra traction on the course. Got it.

yes, they tested this on mythbusters
the results were the tailgate down creates a vortex in the bed that adds drag so tailgate down or removed gets worse gas mileage then tailgate up
also a surprising result was that windows down with a/c off also gets worse gas mileage then windows up and a/c on because of wind drag turbulence
so best gas mileage is with windows up tailgate up and a/c on

I call bullshite on mythbusters. Back in the early 90's I took a brand new v6 full size on a dealer trade a traffic was moving about 80-85 and the truck was really struggling to keep up.
Dropped the gate and had no problem keeping up.
Less power needed=less gas burned.

But a tonneau cover improves mpg
Fact
I am uncertain this is true. Best drag coefficient is likely but the extra weight may offset the mileage negatively. Not sure if it’s a net plus, minus, or even.

I have one to keep stuff protected. Powertrax.

Depends on how fast you go.

I miss Mythbusters. That was a damn good show.

Tonneau cover or cap cover will improve mileage over an empty bed.
We have a literal shite ton of trucks here in Texas but I have noticed that cap covers are no where near as prevalent as what I have seen in the upper midwest, what gives?

I member when these were all the rage back in the 80's:

I’m rocking a vintage Air Gate, baw.

I'm impressed you're still kicking it in a Hardbody. Any chance it has a HoT sticker on the back glass?

By keeping the tailgate closed, the wind cycles through your bed in a circular pattern keeping the wind that would cause drag going right over the truck.
Tailgate up= better mileage

Laughed harder than I should’ve at this one.

Low speed aerodynamics is often counterintuitive. Some blunt bodies can have lower drag than those that look ‘sleek.’ And throw in some ground effect front the fact that you are rolling down a road and the problem gets even more technically challenging.

Wasn't there a thread about a guy claiming better gas mileage, or some off the wall shite when you go that fast? Does someone have a link to said thread?

Depends on which of the 30 configurations you have your tailgate in.
