Current back porch grilling debate. Especially the drag at highway speed.

What does the OT say?

No. Mythbusters did a segment and the gate down hurts your mileage

Opening the tailgate may obstruct the view of your trucks nuts. So I’d say keep it closed even if it decreases your mph a tad.

MPH or gas mileage? I mean if you are going 60 it’s the MPH regardless.

Mythbusters did this.

Having the gate up is the most efficient way to drive.

Explanation: If you drive a pickup, common sense might lead you to think that opening the tailgate on the road is the more fuel efficient way to go. ... Closing the tailgate actually improves fuel efficiency because it creates a type of airflow called a separated bubble within the bed of the truck.

It will slow you down due to drag

You get better gas mileage and have less drag with it closed due to a cyclone effect created by the wind. This was on myth busters and they tried it out. Tailgate closed won by a sizeable margin.

Thank God they did this. People stopped driving with their tailgates down almost instantly afterwards.

If you keep it over 90 MPH it will offset any loss due to the tailgate.

It’s really negligible providing you maintain an average speed of around 120-130mph, at that speed you’re practically manufacturing gas.

I try this on my way to ETX on 20 eastbound. I've found my best efficiency is in the left lane.
