Gotta maintain a certain physicsl condition to use the GI Bill
Gotta show for practice
Gotta show for Annual Training
Gotta have a certain GPA to use the GI Bill
School benefits from checks from "rich benefactor or booster" the government.
They got LSU Logos on Camouflage hats and shirts for sale, that's my jersey since Soldiers dont wear numbers.
Glossing over the details its like an Athletic Scholarship.

Do you compete in a sport sanctioned by the school?

Promotion Board where college students (who compete with each other) have advantage over typical enlisted.
Also Officers have to get a Masters and or Doctorates for Promotion.
Also they have ROTC which is sanctioned by the school.

Everyone I knew in college who joined the National Guard while in college did so to avoid some penalties for criminal activity. Mostly teenage BS, but evidently that used to help you get out of trouble back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

I would have said yes until last year, when AFRC cut AT money. I was happy they did honestly. My civilian job pays better.

I guess thats up to my kids.
I can kinda see your point though. There are some parallels. Ultimately not the same thing

No, those are the parameters set forth by your chain of command for you to get a free education while in the NG.
Has absolutely nothing to do with competing in a sport as an athlete.

The 1st LSU RA I had in Hatcher Hall was an ROTC guy named Kirby. He never suspected we were smoking pot all day, but thought we had sneaked girls into our rooms every weekend. He never asked why we had rolled up towels nailed to the bottom of our door, or why our fan was blowing out the window instead of pulling air in.

National Guardsmen are part time reservists. National Guardsmen don’t receive the GI bill. To get the GI bill, you need to have served on active duty.

Pff what?????
ETA: Active Duty had a higher GI Bill. My experience was Tuition Exemption, GI Bill.(National Guard) plus Post 9/11 GI Bill.

quote:Did you serve on active duty in the National Guard? Just being in the National Guard and never being activated is not enough for the GI bill. I take it that you were called up? You have me curious now.
Post-9/11 GI Bill, Chapter 33 For Soldiers with at least 90 days of Active Duty service on or after September 11, 2001, the Post-9/11 GI Bill can cover up to 100 percent of your tuition, depending on the length of time you've served.
