Ahh, simpler times. I believe that would get you shot or sent to Gitmo these days.

The ones I was remembering were the mid 80's to 90's, the tail end of his "career" where he killed, computer store owner, and others, Sacramento, Salt Lake, New Jersey. Guess it was the escalation to murder from wounding that caught my attention. (definitely remember Salt Lake City news coverage)

This was in the series. There is a part where he writes to his brother to tell him something he never told him before. He tells him about the only kid he became friends with in school and there was a girl in their class who liked the friend, and the friend liked her back, but the girl thought Kaczynski was strange so the friend turned on him. Because he was two grades ahead of where he should have been, he had trouble making friends.
When he went to Harvard Professor Murray befriended him and Kaczynski ended up trusting him and telling him all about his views, etc.. And when Murray revealed to him that he was just using him as an experiment it crushed him.
Throughout his life, there were only a few people he trusted... including his brother and they all betrayed him in some way. When he went off to live by himself, he kept up with his brother, but when they published his writing to see if anyone could identify him, his brother's wife recognized the style of writing and they contacted someone who they thought would not say anything, but word ended up getting back to the FBI guy who cracked the case in terms of creating the profile of the type of person they were looking for and it lead to them arresting the Unabomber.. Then his brother was getting on TV all he could to try to convince people the Unabomber was crazy... To try to get an insanity plea, but the Unabomber didn't want that. And saw his brother as betraying him.
They didn't really go into detail as for as the lasting effects of the shock treatments, but out of all the studies, Kaczynski was the only one they were not able to crack.

I watched it when it was shown on the Discovery Channel earlier this year. I think it is a very well-made and engrossing series. I vividly remember when they caught him back in the 90's. One thing I learned from watching the series was that he'd been convinced (on false pretexts) to take part in a very unethical psychological experiment when he was at Harvard. The "study" was sponsored by the FBI as a way to root out communists in society, and it may have been the thing that sent Kaczynski completely over the edge. He already had issues, but after he was humiliated by the bully professor conducting the "experiment," he seemed to really go off the deep end. The whole Unabomber thing is a horrible story and I feel really bad for Kaczynski's victims who were totally innocent people just going about their everyday lives.

According to the series, the FBI's profile of the guy they were looking for was likely a middle aged white male with little education and was probably a mechanic.
They thought, because of how the bombs were made, that only someone who was a mechanic would know how to put that type of bomb together.
Finally, they decided to bring in a new FBI agent who was a linguistics specialist. He read one of his letters and when they told him the guy is likely uneducated, he told them it was just the opposite. It was the first time they ever used language to get a warrant. His repeat of the phrase "you can't eat your cake and have it too" is what brought him down.

I found that part interesting because I am reading a book titled "Brainwash: The History of Mind Control" and the book starts off talking about how, in the late 40s, early 50s, the US was trying to figure out how the Soviet Union was getting US POWs to confess to things that were not true.. And I think the study they did on him was the types of studies they were doing during that time.

Yeah, he actually graduated HS 2 years early and went to Harvard. I think he was 16 when he started at Harvard.

Best thing in the series to me and interesting is that the sketch looked more like the first sketch artist than the FBI's many years later. According to the show, the lady was remembering the original sketch artist more than Ted.

During his time at Harvard he participated in a study by Henry A. “Harry” Murray, a professor in Harvard’s Department of Social Relations.

I remember both the Unabomber bombings & arrest and the DC sniper shootings & arrests like they happened yesterday. Simpler times before social media and corrupt main stream media.
