There was a thread on here a few weeks back with fellow baws talking to each other about their current job searches. One of them suggested hiring a resume writing service to help yours stand out more so that is what I am looking at doing. There are a few like TopResume and ResumeWriters that offer other packages including an updated cover letter and updated LinkedIn profile so I am trying to see what everyones experiences are with this before I fork over a nice sum of cash. Any recommendations or descriptions of experiences using these services are appreciated.

My buddy used a resume writing service and it really helped him out. I didn’t care for some of the options and layouts (using standout quotes like a magazine article), but it worked for him.

He used “Storyline Resumes” or something like that.

Take the time to learn how to write your own resume. It is not very hard, and you will be able to talk through each task.

Used 5 different resume "writers/critiques" at the beginning of last year. Received 5 very different resumes. 0/10 would not use again.

If you don't have much to put on it maybe they could help.

If you have a good education and work history it will speak for itself no matter the format.

Most hiring managers are scanning for key words

They're a dime a dozen. I'd look for a local business - not even local to you - just an independent proprietor. Like "resume services in Dallas, TX" and then go with one who has good reviews / tolerable pricing.

The ones like TopResume and ResumeWriters online are likely offshoring.

If you're a complete novice on resumes and have specific jobs in mind they can tailor a resume to hit the keywords that will stand out to resume scans and recruiters.

Be careful with the overly formatted resumes. ATS systems can’t pickup many of the text boxes and the high priced resume won’t even be looked at.

Use two resumes for each job. One targeted and basic for ATS to track, and then post a full resume with all the BS and fluff. Resumes get 10s, maximum, to scan and review. CGL recruiting has some great resume formats. You can also work with them for writing and LinkedIn profiles. If you want one on one support, Amanda Rico can help you out. Look her up on LinkedIn.

I used Zety.com recently. Mostly just wanted a format that looked more appealing and I didn't care to try to format it in a certain way.

Have a second interview later this week.

My company paid for 3 months of Lee Hecht Harrison which included a resume review. I thought they did a good job. I got a job in a couple months in a horrible COVID job market.

The good ones are worth it.

I talked to a guy once who ran a service, and he sits down with the candidate and asks them questions about their past jobs. That helps them remember selling points to add to their resume. I always suspected that it's harder than it sounds or he wouldn't have revealed that for free.

You might not need it these days. If you're applying on Indeed it'll prompt you for missing skills that you can add to the list if you have them. Other good thing is as you view listings you might think "Hey wait, I did shift scheduling at Acme Widgets" and add it.

I used them in my last search and was very helpful in taking specialized tasks and responsibilities related to one industry and making them applicable to really any industry I applied to. I went through LinkedIn. You can request a quote and get a few back with different services and prices. It helped in my case.

I am doing the free trial on jobscan right now. It helps you understand what needs to be in Your resume compared to the job description.

ok maybe that was assholish but here’s the deal.
90% of job postings are looking for very specific skills.
If you have those skills that’s literally all I need to see on the resume.
If you don’t then don’t apply

it is an employees market right now. Everyone is begging for a good fit. Find the openings that you are a good fit for and you will get the job

Use jobscan.ca

It'll show you keyword changes that'll get your resume through the automated system.

You should upload a custom resume for each position. A resume service may give format guidance, but you need to work the keywords

You need to find someone with a specialization in your industry so they can take it from generic to very specific & targeted.

I'm a safety/risk/insurance person who shopped some services and the poor ones looked like osha Google searches & could not really articulate my industry successes & designations.

The good one, which was industry specific, took it layers deeper and is worth every penny.

He also make one friendly for online apps and it is completely different than what I send to the hiring team.
