I think drunk driving is safer than texting and driving. Your reflexes may be slow, but at least you have your eyes on the road the whole time.

Probably is for most. However the legal ramifications for a DUI are far greater. I don't feel like spending a couple thousand dollars in fines and another couple on a lawyer and losing my license over a couple of beers. That can wait till I get home if I feel the need.

I’ll do a road jerk every once in a while if it’s been a long day, but I’d never drink and drive.

Shhh. Don't let MADD hear you say that?
But it's 100% true unless you're sloppy arse drunk and over .17% BAC.

In all seriousness, it is a trashy, low rent thing to do.
Why?
Like OP, this is something that hasn’t ever crossed my mind. Now I’m apt to have a road beer on the way to the Astros game tonight.

I put this into a similar category as a shower beer. You could do it. But why?

I used to 20 years ago. A tall boy for the last half hour on uncluttered four lane. Then I realized I couldn't live with the aftermath of a possible accident, so I quit doing it.
It tastes just as good when you get home anyway.

I used to till a few years ago. I used to get off work and take the long way home and listen to talk radio and have 4-8 beers depending on my mood. I had to stop because I was so fat and miserable. One time I crashed into a ditch on a rural road and some guy pulled over and helped pull me out. Never got pulled over once even though I did that every day for 15 years.

Used to do that when I worked in production. I'm not sure there's anything better than a cold beer on the way home after sweating your dick off doing manuals labor all day.

Back in my manual labor days, I used to carpool with bossman in his truck. On the way home, he'd get a 12 pack of bud light and a couple of pepsis because they were also in blue cans in case a cop pulled us over we were just drinking pepsi. I always had to piss like a mofo by the time I got home.

I prefer road head from your wife after work.

We had road beers back in my oilfield days. Even working morning tower it was nothing drinking beer at 7am while driving off the location. Sometimes someone would pull the cap off of a whisky bottle, throw the cap out the window and everyone rode around in the truck till the bottle was empty.
Hardly ever touch any of it now.

Its crazy how times have changed. My uncle (who is now in his 80s) tells the story of how he used to drive down hwy 1 to go pick up his stack of newspapers he delivered when he was 9 years old.
My wife's aunt (RIP) used to drive the school bus. She picked up all the kids, drove them to school, then went in herself. She was only in the 9th or 10th grade, and had no license because the state hadn't started issuing them yet. She had to cross the Conecuh river to get to school and told the story of how the river was up over the bridge during a flood. She made a couple of the kids get out and walk ahead of her so she could see where the bridge was. She never was that good of a driver, but she took her new car for a spin on her 100th birthday.

I’m curious what an open container fine is in texas on average. The law says “up to $500” per container but do they always max it out? Or is it common to get a much lower fine?

It’s like Butthead once said at AA, “What’s one beer gonna do?”

Used to love a tall one on the way home from a softball game in the heat, when I lived in La. Nothing like cranking up the AC, music and popping a top for the drive home.
