So a dude I work with got a ticket a couple weeks ago for an open container after being pulled over for a tail light he didn't know was out. He said that he has had a road beer 3 or 4 days a week after work for 15 plus years and this is the first ticket he's ever gotten.

Well, a few days after this conversation, I noticed a different guy who leaves at the same time as me usually walk to the back of his truck reach over in a cooler and pull out two ice cold Miller Lites.

It got me to thinking is this a normal thing? I'm all against drunk driving, but a road beer after work before getting to the house would hit the spot some days while sitting in traffic. Most days, I can wait until I'm home. But if I get held up over a wreck after a particularly shitty day at work, I see no issue with popping open a cold one. I'm not getting drunk off one beer.

Practically speaking this is safer than having a beer then driving home. But no that seems way too risky

It’s kinda funny to think about. Every Thursday I get a drink, maybe 2, at a spot near work and drive home. Usually it’s a Cahaba Blond which is just a bit stronger than your average beer. Nobody bats an eye at that, but if I were to take those beers to go somehow and drink them on the way home, I’d supposedly be putting people in danger

A single road beer after work is one of life's last remaining pleasures.

Every day when I lived in Houston and was commuting to Katy for work. The road beer is the best beer of the day. I was also an alcoholic though

Yeah, I'm not condoning it, not would I do it because of said risks. It just blew my mind how casually these two guys seem to take driving with open beers.

No, but I have nothing against it other than an open container ticket (not worth the risk for a miller light in the car).

But is any different than any other drinking ritual, like beer(s) when grilling (which I do regardless of time of day or day of the week) - not really.

I’ll take my chances with a 2 road beer driver versus a mom on her instagram.

Kind of what I thought as well. The guy who got the ticket I know well enough that we sometimes hang out outside of work in certain social settings and I can say pretty confidently that he is an alcoholic. He's just the kind that can still function in daily life because he makes enough money and I guess those around him don't mind.

I mean, the conversation of him telling me he drinks on the way home more days than doesn't for 15 years kinda confirms my suspicion.

This was radio host Michael Berry's saying for years. I haven't listened to him in a while but he use to always advocate for 1 road beer after work for a man...or a butch lesbian woman

We had a gas station connected to our old lot. My old boss was such a degenerate he would pull into there for his 2-for-1 25oz heinekens and a fresh pack of smokes

Sometimes, and when it's just the right day and just the right beer, it's hard to top. As noted with your coworker, it didn't hurt anyone and it didn't result in a dui, accordingly. I think an open container was still legal in some states as of 15 years ago. Regardless, it is much less dangerous than texting and driving. Just stay away from that road whiskey, and you'll be fine.
