The last few people I’ve met that are from Shreveport are kind of proud to be trashy - is that kind of the same thing?
Shreveport used to have a lot of oil money, executives and professionals were plentiful. All of that is pretty much gone, those jobs went to Texas and Shreveport is dead.
My older daughter still lives there with her husband (South of town) and my older brother is a CPA there.
Daughter went back to be near family, and regrets it.

And I was born and raised here. Can’t wait to evacuate, hoping to get my boys out as well.

Nah. Not me.
I would never say I hate living in Baton Rouge.
I'm probably BR's biggest fan.

I’ve been thinking about it. 1st choice would be Katy, TX. Also, thinking about MD after visiting it recently. Very nice but houses are off the chart.

Agree. I lived in Dallas for 2 years after college and couldn't wait to move back home.
I hate traffic and crime like normal people but the city is my home and I love it. I don't give a frick what the OT thinks.

Birmingham is a shithole’s shithole. Leaving BR completely outta the discussion Birmingham objectively sucks.
I laugh when I read comments like this. I have family in Birmingham and it is a great city. You obviously have not spent a lot of time there. I'm not talking about west Birmingham, but spend time in Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia, and especially Trussville. Trussville is a gorgeous suburb with miles of bike trails along the Cahaba River that run past parks and ball fields. Trussville's main residential area was a planned community built in the 1930's and has lots of charm. The downtown area has a new public gathering and pavillion for concerts. Drive along the top of Red Mountain past houses on the mountain that overlook the city. Drive from Vulcan Park all the way down the mountain on 20th street into the heart of the city. It's a gorgeous downtown area.
In regards to Baton Rouge, it does have more culture than a lot of southern cities. I enjoy living here, but have now read 26 pages and still haven't read anything that will help me plan my evening for a date with my wife.

Yeah the suburbs of Birmingham are really nice.

BR is just terribly run city with no natural redeeming qualities.
And the worst part is that every objective measurement of the city’s progression is trending negative.
I think what really cemented it for me - that I’m getting out as soon as the kids go to college - was the last mayoral election. I don’t see how a community can reconcile the objective poor performance of the local government and still vote for its continuation. It’s insanity on an incredible level.

My wife is from Birmingham and her whole family lives around there so I've been a lot over the past 18 years. Birmingham the city is pretty meh. There are some nice areas but it's probably about 75% ghetto. The best parts about Birmingham are the surrounding areas for sure. The burbs are much nicer than anything around BR.

I hear this said so often, and I'm not calling you out personally, but can anyone be specific instead of just generalizing "culture?" What exactly does Baton Rouge offer? Mostly over-rated restaurants? An occasional merchants' festival on Government Street? Weekly Cowboy Mouth concerts?
Large parts of the city look like a third world country, and outside of LSU sports I can't think of much that you can't find plenty of other places.

Yeah the traffic thing never bothered me, always knew the ways to take to work and where not to go during certain times if I didn't have to.
I was younger and never lived far from the campus area. Furthest I lived away was Beauregard town. But I could just go down highland early on game days and get to a parking spot. But they also used to have the free lot by Kirby that I don't believe exists anymore.

Not sure if he means something else. But baton Rouge is the Capitol. It's on the river, LSU is deeply imbedded in its culture. Whether you think these things are relevant doesn't mean anything because they are to the state as a whole.
I mean you can name a shite load of cities that don't have that.

I grew up in BR. Lived there from 1979-2000. It was, I thought, a great place to grow up in. Not too big, and not too small. Plenty for teenagers to do. Bowling, skating, malls, arcades, theaters, etc. and in general safe. There was crime but seemed to be pretty isolated up north. It seems to me Katrina was the kill shot. It went down hill with swiftness after that, and present government is pulling the plug on life support. I have little reason to go there now since my old man retired and my folks moved over to St. Tammany.

Both overrated. I’m torn for many reasons. But retreating to AP, LP or even the Felicianas thinking the roaches don’t follow is foolish.

I would never talk shite about my hometown or the people in it. I moved away ten years ago, and I would just say that there's a big world out there that fits with a lot of different people.
If you like family, warm weather, outdoorsy stuff like hunting and fishing, attending college events, and love eating fried and rich food, than Baton Rouge is right there with you. And I'll say this, having lived and traveled all over the world at this point-- and this goes for all of Louisiana--- Louisianians are amongst the warmest, friendliest, good-times-havingest people I've ever encountered. Southern hospitality is a real thing, and I think Louisianians have more of it than any other state. And I also think this board sometimes can be a poor representation of how actually great people are in the city-- even the biggest internet warriors are actually great when you meet them. I even miss the summer thunderstorms.
I come back often and am impressed by some of the change-- little things like restaurants popping up, yoga studios, good coffee shops like Lighthouse and Magpie, the work they did to bring outdoor facilities to the Olympia Stadium area, the little Farmer's Market at Pennington, and nature trails and bike trails down the levee. There's been a lot of good things happening there that's easier to see when you come back a few times a year.
I'd say to OP if there's a way you want to live-- go find it because it's out there. No place can be everything to everyone. And there's miserable people in the greatest cities in the world.
I'll never live in BR again. My career calls me elsewhere, and I'm going to travel the world the rest of my life. But it'll always have a special place in my heart.
