Been seeing adds asking for donations to keep it going. I gave a few bucks.

I make a point to donate to them every year they ask for donations. It's a great service and I can't imagine the upkeep on that site.

Serious question here, because I don't know much about Wikipedia. Why is it that they don't do something to monetize their site like almost every other website out there? They get a lot of traffic, so I would imagine that even just one small ad on every page would be able to take care and help them pay for their servers and whatever else they need the money for.

Or, do they have some form of revenue but need the donations because they don't generate enough? I don't think this scenario is the case, bc I don't think they monetize their site in any way, but I don't have a clue.

Wikipedia and Reddit are the only things I donate to online. Both great sites.

I donated years ago, when I was in college. I regret it every year. They send me dozens of emails asking for more money. I get it, I used yall for 5 years to get a 4 year degree, get over it.

I’m sure there are different reasons but one might be they are supposed to be an impartial source of information, just a place to go to look for the facts about something. Doesn’t always succeed at that but I think that’s the idea.

I suppose if they take money from advertisers they can become open to biased or censored articles. Leave out the dirty stuff for the highest bidders. Maybe they already do that. I don’t know. Could be a way to lose credibility.

I could definitely see people/companies paying to clean up their record.
