but it was never a good sports car.

Wut? Vipers had some seriously impressive times at the Nurburgring. They are outstanding sports cars, not so much as a daily driver.

From what I remember, it was designed as a race car for the street... no traction control, no automatic trans, high HP, RWD

Pure driving experience was the goal

The concept it was based on was a modern Shelby Cobra... I think Dodge screwed up the marketing by allowing it to be in the same category as a corvette and not on the same level as a lambo (thus dragging down appeal and expectations)... keeping in mind that Lamborghini was a subsidiary of Chrysler and actually forged the original engine blocks

That is one beautiful car, but it had some serious performance issues for the price. It couldn't hang with Corvettes or Ford GTs on a track, so they put this huge rear spoiler on it to create downforce. But the spoiler was so big that it slowed down the top speed on the straights.

For the roughly same price[base viper] on a Vette, I can get better HP/weight and a badass magnetic suspension

The Viper ACR holds 13 track records. It blew the doors off of pretty much everything. At one time (possibly still) it held more records than any other production car on the planet.

Dodge Viper plant

A car company had an entire plant to build one model? That doesn't seem very efficient.

I know a guy who has two of them, an older one and an almost brand new one.

It's unfortunate but most people who spend that bracket of money on a car really aren't looking for a shitty ride, tons of cabin noise,
3 pedals, and a car that in no way tries to prevent you from killing yourself with it. Not many trophy wives are interested in that. It's a mass produced race car and the market for that just isn't very big.

The 1996 viper with the blue paint job and the white racing stripes. That car was beautiful.

GM's Bowling Green assembly plant only makes Corvettes. They did make Cadillac XLR from 2003 - 2009, but from opening in 1981 until 2003 and then from 2010 until now they only make Vettes.

Typically a plant assembles cars based on a particular body or platform. For GM, the Corvette and the XLR were the only vehicles on the Y Body platform, which is what Bowling Green assembles.

My guess is the Viper had its own unique platform and the plant specialized in assembling that one platform and cannot assemble other platforms without a major overhaul and re-tooling.

You sure?

I thought the Viper was dominating it's class on the racing circuit.

Thanks for that explanation. I wasn't aware of that, but felt that there had to be something.

I plan on owning one of those in the not too distant future. One annoying thing I've read is finding tires. There rear tires are a unique size and apparently very hard, and expensive, to find.

Great car to look at but not a great car to drive on the street. 4th Gen is the best but Gen I and Gen II were glorified kit cars and had the build quality/ fit and finish of a PT Cruiser.

I didn't care for the rear of the Stealth. But I'd like them to bring back the Mitsubishi 3000GT

It did until GM began racing the C5R/C6R/C7R
