Seeing this while shopping online. Many are hefty. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks.

just know it is negotiable. wait until you are about to sign the paperwork and then tell them it is too high and you will go somewhere else.

Ascension Honda let me walk over a $450 vin etch on my second car within 6 months when I was already paying over sticker.

It's an elective fee the dealership adds...you can try to negotiate it off or at least the equivalent amount off the sale price. But as an FYI the "Doc Fee" is intended to cover the cost of all the back office employees who deal with all the paperwork required to keep a dealership operating.

id definitely walk over that. vin etch is the most useless shite you could possibly get screwed over with on a car deal.

Have you priced printer ink lately?

It is standard everywhere but some places are way higher than others. It is negotiable, but you'll have a harder time with that one specifically than some other things you negotiate. It is basically their processing fee and it is a 'legit fee' for closing cost and crap and the sites aren't scamming you or anything, though we can all agree the amount they try and charge is absurd. I just bought a car and was negotiate the number down about half of what they charged and got some other waived.

I thought that's what all the markup on vehicles, finance kickbacks, warranty sales, gap insurance, etc. . . did. So the doc fee is just another markup item. This is why stealerships have such a shitty name. Just put the price on the car and be done with it. Why not charge for the toilet paper in the bathroom and the electricity to cool the building as line items as well?

Agreed, but the problem is still the shortage of cars these days. If you refuse the doc fees or Vin etch and threaten to walk, they might sell it out from undere you.
I bought a beater truck last summer for some projects. I showed up 2 hours after it was unloaded from the truck. Well after I signed my check, I heard two salesmen calling customers telling them not to bother coming in, it was already sold.

Next time I buy a vehicle, I'm going in an hour before they close to start the process. And I'm taking the day off after, and may also take a dinner with me to eat while they're trying to sell me a truck. I'm on their time.

Look up dealer holdback if buying new. Negotiate that too if you can.

Just bought a used car at a reputable local (Birmingham) used car dealer with NO additional markup.
Price is a non negotiable one, though.
So, I'm sure they just factored all those extra fees into the listed price.
Note though, the price listed was on the low side of the kbb.com listing of "private party" range.

It’s a BS fee you can usually get them to waive. Not sure how willing they’d be in the market though.
Supposedly it’s their file to file paperwork. I always tell them that should be included in the price and I’m not paying it. Some will dig in, others will give in. Guess it depends on how badly they want to sell it.
