Now the "formal" living room - that's what we have no use for

This is kind of the case here too. Open floorplan living room has a ton of outside light and that affects the picture on the TV. Pretty much we use the media room upstairs for movies or TV binge sessions. Kids are using their own tvs or phones for media these days and they don't have to fight about what is on the one TV anymore.

We don't have a dining room per se, our table is in our kitchen and we use it nearly every night to eat supper as a family on.

Just got finished with lunch at it with friends after church. I turned my breakfast room into a sitting area and “deformalized” my dining room. We use it all the time. In the past week we did school work, painted, worked remote, and ate there.

we replaced the dining table with a pub height square table, two on each side, six total. it's now combination desk during the day and happy hour spot at night. we have a smaller table in our open kitchen we used for most meals.

I have seating for 18 (without adding extra leaves) at 2 dining tables. It’s an extremely open floor plan,
To the point where the people at both tables can actually see each other.

One table is closer to the kitchen, and one is closer the the main living area, but more formal.

One is used every day, but both frequently enough to justify it (holidays, parties, etc.). I hat do you “no table” heathens do? Eat on your lap in front of a TV?

We renovated our kitchen and knocked the wall out between the dining room and kitchen and just expanded the cabinets to the whole space and just have the one table now that we use all the time. I love it.

Only for holiday meals, really. Not used for anything else other than a prep area for upcoming projects that we’re working on.
But our dining room is full of family heirloom items that remind us of our childhood and families.

I play piano, so the space gets used. Now the argument is how nice of a piano can I buy without getting yelled at.

Grew up in a house with a breakfast nook and a dining room. We rarely used the dining room.

I live in a shack now. My wife always has a bunch of bull shite on the table so I eat on the couch like I'm living in a trailer or some shite.

We prefer the patio for dinners.

We like to sit on the carport and wave to the neighbors.

wife and i made some life choices early on in our marriage

-rent until we found the “perfect” house
- wait until we were settled in before trying to have a family
- if we had kids, raise them in a traditional family setting as much as we could

so we bought an older house (built 1936, 1800 sq ft) in a nice neighborhood, which had a modest dining room between the kitchen and the living room, wherein we ate 90% of our meals as the kids grew up

frequently when they would have friends over for dinner, they would comment on how the only time they sit down for meals around a dining room table was at our house

while nowadays with kids grown (one still living with us having recently graduated from college) we usually eat the evening meal off the coffee table in the living room while watching a movie, but still eat in the dining room at least 3-4 times a week

that said, every family is different, but this works for us

Honestly the thought of having to watch someone eat, while they watch me eat, while we have conversations,, everyday, would make me absolutely miserable.

It takes me always less than 10 minutes to eat. It's not an event for me. Just my preference.

I just now used it to fold cloths, we paid $1,800 for the set and have never eaten a meal on it.
