Trust me. My son is a triboliogist. You can switch back to conventional, you can mix them ... as long as it is the common brands. The base stock in both is dino.
Switching oil weights likewise (5-30, 10-40, etc.).
The common brands calling themselves "synthetic" are really not much more than ultra refined oil. Real synthetics are extremely expensive, ... even for poor college students driving escalades.
The only benefit is the additive packages which allows a "synthetic" to go 10k miles or more than conventional. You do your own figures to see if it is cost effective.
Real synthetics can go much further but manufacturers suggest the oil be sampled at intervals in between oil changes. This is mainly used in fleet service. My son's company does not sell real synthetic.
What is more important is the filter. I don't even let the cheap Frams ride in the back seat of my car in the original packaging inside the shopping bag .... and that is for my MC, 4 wheelers & lawnmower.
As for us, we use Pennzoil synthetic and change at 5k over. Pennzoil is using LNG base. It is a cleaner base stock. Not cost effective but we are not poor college students. We just absorb the cost difference. We used Mobil 1 until recently. They changed to a cheaper base stock due to cost concerns. Now they are the same as the others.
For all you oil nuts out there reading this, the best in dino based oil on the market right now is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

And FWIW, once you go synthetic, you don't go back.
Not necessarily true. She can switch over to the high mileage oil at this point. Good for a vehicle with 150k and less expensive

i won't change mine either...screw that. i have a guy i've been using for years that'll come to my office, pickup my vehicle, fix whatever, and bring it back to me.

I have a car and all I use is synthetic, and we had a problem with head gasket and had to pull it off, and the head and valves were super clean when fixing my car. It all looked brand new. That synthetic is awesome. I will never use regular oil

As Redbone alluded to previously, there is a deep secret in the motor oil world regarding "synthetic" oil.
Let me just say that for the most part, the extra money we spend on "synthetic" oil is not necessary. The short version of this story is save your money and go with regular oil. Change your oil at the recommended intervals and you should be fine.
The long version...
Oils that are commonly referred to as synthetic are really highly refined mineral based oils. The "synthetic" label is really marketing and not reality. A true synthetic oil is a PAO Class IV oil and is going to cost you in the neighborhood of $10 to $15 a quart and they are primarily ester based. Brands such as Redline, Motus, and Eneos are examples of what I am referring to.
What is commonly marketed as synthetic while not truly synthetic are still good oils. What I am saying is that if you change your oil regularly based upon the mfg recommendations most people really do not need to spend the extra for what is marketed as synthetic.

So is my Mobil 1 European 0/40 Full Synthetic just a marketing gimmick?

Short answer is yes... You can pick this oil up at walmart for about $5.10 qt according to a quick google search.
The Base stock oil in it is mineral based. The additive package is probably different in some way in order to meet some european spec.
Having said that nothing I have said takes away from the quality of the oil. Mobil 1 products are very good oils.

I'm going to get an oil change and they always ask if I want regular or synthetic. I usually get synthetic but they say it's not necessary
Synthetic... Always go synthetic. Will save in the long run as far as # of oil changes, wear and tear, etc.

I use whatever the owners manual calls for. The car has been engineered and therefore some thought was put into it at the factory. Do you put whatever gasoline you want in it? Why would you do it with oil?

You can go 5-10k miles on conventional oil and not hurt anything. Just don't race it or drive in extreme conditions also make sure you get the right viscosity and a decent oil filter. The 3k mile oil change is a myth. Switch to conventional and save your $$$.

But the price difference usually washes out with an increased interval recommended by the manufacturer...
Usually about 2x the price and 2x the miles.
If you are talking about vehicle manufacturers, they typically say one or the other and the interval is based on that.
I don't doubt that it's a marketing scheme, but the increased price has always came with a relatively equal increase in mileage interval, from what I have gathered.

I use Mobil 1 in 2 vehicles as per the manufacturer's recommendation.

I always use synthetic and change it myself, cost and time wise synthetic > conventional.
Most conventional say 3000 miles
I change synthetic every 5000 miles
Right now:
$23.99 for a 5qt conventional and purolator filter at advanced
$32.99 for a 5qt synthetic and pureone filter at advanced
too easy of a decision even if the synthetic 'benefits' aren't as much as it insists upon.

My Ford manual specifies Motorcraft syn blend which is good oil with 5, 7.5, and 10k change intervals depending on driving conditions. I swapped out at the first change to Mobil 1 and go by the oil life monitor and change as it gets near 20%. Supposedly the algorithm can fairly precisely determine idle time effect, etc. Regardless, 8k and I'm changing it even with a lot of highway miles and could probably push 10k. My wife's car requires 502/505 Euro specs so I use Castrol Edge and change between 9-10k.

I used Mobil 1 in my 2003 Chevy Silverado from day 1. I changed the oil and filter (Fram), every 10,000 miles. Just turned 400,000 miles and the engine doesn't burn any oil. I'm a believer!

quote:My car runs straight plain old motor oil. It's got 16000 miles and it's got 20% oil life left to go until its second oil change. 3000-5000 miles is from an ancient time and a nice way to sell more motor oil.
Synthetic gets you more miles before next change 5000-8000 vs 3000-5000 depending on driving. Worth it imo.
