Si Senor.
While oil rig rough necking off-shore in the late 60's, French (Cajun) is ALL they spoke. After a week or two on the rig I almost forgot how to speak English.

I have Acadian ancestors and was taught about Acadia and Acadians in school. My grandparents talked about how they would get punished for speaking French in school.
When I was in lower elementary the school had a program where some NLU students from France would come down and teach us French. We all fricking loved it. It stopped around the beginning of the 3rd grade. :(

My uncle was one of them. He grew up speaking exclusively French. When he went offshore, it didn’t change. He didn’t have to learn English until he became a state trooper.

J'en parles pas français mais je suis en train d'approndre.
I've been trying to learn French but as an old man it is very very difficult. I do a lot of family genealogy and can read some French but conversationally I'm completely lost.
There are at least four different lineages from France on my mother's side, most through Martinique, and I do have Acadian ancestors but I never claimed myself as a Cajun, primarily because I consider it a culture more than a genetic inheritance.

I’ve been fascinated with the story of the British expulsion of Acadians

In 1755, New England troops embarked on a "great and noble scheme" to expel 18,000 French-speaking Acadians ("the neutral French") from Nova Scotia, killing thousands, separating innumerable families, and driving many into forests where they waged a desperate guerrilla resistance. The right of neutrality; to live in peace from the imperial wars waged between France and England; had been one of the founding values of Acadia; its settlers traded and intermarried freely with native Mikmaq Indians and English Protestants alike. But the Acadians' refusal to swear unconditional allegiance to the British Crown in the mid-eighteenth century gave New Englanders, who had long coveted Nova Scotia's fertile farmland, pretense enough to launch a campaign of ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. John Mack Faragher draws on original research to weave 150 years of history into a gripping narrative of both the civilization of Acadia and the British plot to destroy it.

Really not a good place to ask this question. Most posters here don’t live in Louisiana and they hate Louisiana with a passion.

Not Acadian, but am french.

The British have a long history of brutality in North America and the banishment of French settlers from Acadia
