A couple people. They’re in IT jobs. I wouldn’t hate being in that sector, but the hiring process is a clusterfrick. I have to assume private pays more.
i went from government to private sector IT about 7 years ago. it was low stress... pretty decent pay, but very boring and I got tired of our school district fleecing the tax payers for things that students didn't need. my department didn't really push for a giant budget, but our school wanted to be really progressive and buy stuff all the time.
the stress is more than it ever was for the school most days, but when $$$ is on the line, it's 10x anything i ever had at the school district. worst day at the district was something not working for a day or two and getting yelled at by a superintendent, that would thank me after it was fixed. now millions are on the line. despite that, the work is very rewarding and i love my job 75% of the time.
that being said, i could see a time where my kids are out of college and I'm in my late 40s/early 50s and going back to finish my career out in government or for school districts. it actually can be honest work.

You know what the say, If you can, do. If you can't, teach. And if you can't teach, work for the gov't.

Most of the replies are about elected officials. I thought that you meant from the private to public, but not elected.
I've met engineers and attorney's that couldn't run their own shop and took jobs working for the city or parish. The absolute worst that I've dealt with have to be accountants that went to work for the IRS. From my experience, I don't know if a lot of those people can even tie their shoes.

This certainly isn’t true in my field. I was working at a Fortune Top 30 company a few years back and my director said they considered people with experience working in federal government as a big plus.

We could have had him as governor during all this Covid stuff and we put up Rispone instead. Let that sink in

I know people that are very good at what they do who opt to work for the government because they either:
1. Want to serve "the state" instead of some "instrument of profit". They see public service as morally superior than private business.
2. Are practicing in a field that requires public sector connection. Some people actively want to either instruct or research for a living.
3. Are searching for long run stability that the private sector will never offer.

One of my partners went to work at the VA
He wanted an easier job with no call and was fine with less money

As a child in the 50's and living not that far from Washington D.C., most of my Mother's friends lost their maids to gubment (sic) jobs in D.C.

I’ve worked in both private sector and government and I’ve learned that most people everywhere you go are morons. No real difference TBH.
This.
People act like the only morons are in government, but they aren't. They just shuffle around more in the private sector because they are easier to fire.

If you are talking about going in to an elective office, just about every member of congress and most past presidents would qualify.
Most cabinet secretaries are/were successful in some business or another before their appointments. You can also add in a lot of ambassadors as well.
You can probably chalk it up to ego.
