One group that I find is barely represented at all in Louisiana is the Jewish people. I live in Lafayette, and I believe there used to be a synagogue in town, but I don’t believe it’s still active. There is a small Jewish cemetery downtown. I feel like I never really have knowingly met any Jewish people in this area.

There are two synagogues in BR but they are merging. It is a fairly small group outside New Orleans.

Believe Metarie is the second largest eruv is the world, or maybe just the US.

NOLA eruv is pretty big these days as well though.

My great grandfather ran a department store in New Orleans first half of the 20th century. A common thing he and other merchants did was set up new immigrants (largely from Russian/Poland fleeing pogroms) with a years worth of inventory to get started with a store of their own in places like bogalusa, Opelousas, meridian, etc.

It was an act that could be described as many things, but it was in part an early form of crowd sourcing. About once a year a trip to New York would be made to purchase goods for the upcoming year for an entire region and shipped down and distributed amongst the network. This is part of why you will see Jewish surnames in buildings and businesses in just about every town in America.

New Orleans has a museum of Jewish southern history. Louis Armstrong wore a Star of David his entire life. The first Rex was Jewish. Great stories abound.

There is the chabad as well, but mainly for the campus. Think the same rabbi runs the nola and br chabad.

The Metairie one is pretty big, but there are bigger ones in North America.

There’s an 18 mile eruv for Manhattan. Atlanta has a large one as well.

I knew a few Jewish people when I lived in New Orleans, but I don't believe I know any in the Acadiana area.

No

We do have a decently large Lebanese population, pretty sure most of them are Christian though.

I think it's 15 mil. Imagine what it would be had the holocaust not happened.

It has been many years since I heard the claim; may never have been true.

Think the Metry one is around 10-12 miles in length

I did business with one who would cry tears if he didn't get 5 dollars off his already discounted deal.

My wife’s sister married a Jew from Jersey when she was at Tulane. Pretty big drama since she was raised Christian and had to convert. That was before my time though. I just got to see her evolve into a raging liberal. BIL was actually cool though. They moved to Jersey after they graduated. I
say that in past tense cause they divorced about 5 years ago. I guess he was getting danger close to getting his inheritance and I am talking millions so he cut bait. However she is bat shite crazy too so that probably factored in to the decision making as well.

I know a family in Houma that has Jewish roots. The last couple generations I’m pretty sure have all converted to Catholicism, but I’m pretty sure my buddy’s dad converted when he married in the early 70s. Don’t think there was ever a synagogue in Houma.

On that note, when the movie School Ties came out I didn’t understand what the big deal was, growing up in a non Jewish area I never knew anything about people being antisemitic, that’s when I learned it was ever a thing.

I don't know if there are more or less Jewish people living in Metairie, but there were at least three Jewish families on my street.

Sol Gothard was a long time juvenile judge. He had four or five sons who were all high achievers in high school. I would be shocked to hear if they all weren't successful later in life.

Dr Finger was a dentist who's son is now either the Assistant or Chief Medical Officer at Children's Hospital. His daughter is an ACLU lawyer.

Mr Rosenberg lived across the street and worked for NASA, I think. (It was the late 60's) He had a very large and impressive picture of Albert Einstein in his den. I don't know what his son's turned out to be.

There may have been other Jews lurking in the neighborhood. I wasn't seeking them out. But the ones I met as a child all seemed to be of above average intelligence and academically focused.

Lake Charles had Mueller’s department store (Jewish owned iirc) back in the day. Also Tony Kushner was raised in Lake Charles. Any city in Louisiana that has a decent sized hospital likely has some Jewish doctors on staff.
