We do it. Though we have a glass pickle ornament that we hide in the tree somewhere.

I bet that was really beautiful. Passionate, affectionate... a real mingling of two souls in spiritual ecstasy.

It’s a German thing, right? Yes I already had one anyway, but also my tree is all food ornaments so it works well.

Growing up, I had never heard of this, but my wife's family had a pickle ornament on the tree and the first kid to find it, got a gift.

My Son-in-law was born in Munich, grew up in Stuttgart, and now lives in Berlin, and when we asked him and his family about this "German Tradition", they look at us like we were crazy. They said they never heard of that.

We do, did it my entire childhood from as early I can remember till I was 22. I won exactly 2... A Galileo thermometer (GOAT) and a popcorn tin (woat). My brother won like 7 years in a row.

My wife broke my Galileo thermometer last year cleaning the garage...

Next year will be the first time we try it with our kids who will be 6 and 3.

It’s a very regional German tradition, from Saarbrücken

Explains why he wouldn’t be familiar with it.

My reading attributes it to the Von Trohlzöppen lineage.
