They’re mostly coal powered cars

quote:We will need far fewer charging stations than we have gas pumps. Every single building with electricity is a "charging station". The reason we need so many gas pumps is because you can't fill up at every building. The vast majority of our time is spent either at home or at work, so who cares how slow it is? Cars sit parked 23 hours out of the day.
Let's talk charging stations. My local Race Trac has 40 gas pumps. Within a 5 mile radius of my home there are 11 gas stations. That's a lot of gas pumps to be replaced with charging stations.
quote:And that's 10 minutes of your time wasted, every week. Charging at home and work takes far less of your time and attention.
Let's talk charge time. My ICE vehicle fills up with gasoline in 10 minutes.
quote:You don't have to do that.
Home charging: OK. Going to have to go a wire up for the large amp charger in the garage which will be a large investment.
quote:Your next door neighbor should probably not invest in an EV fleet right now.
My next door neighbor has 5 cars , has 3 teenage sons. How the hell they will be to charge all that?
quote:Doubtful. Why do people exaggerate this so much? With so much charging happening off-peak, the grid won't even notice in most areas. Especially given how long it will take for EV adoption to ramp up.
Power grid load. Get ready for blackouts.
quote:Even if so, that's a roughly 2X improvement in energy efficiency, resource utilization, and costs.
With an EV we are just moving the tailpipe from our car to the powerplant because solar and wind will never be able to cope with the load.
quote:And those same fuels burned in a large heat engine to produce electricity are able to drive an EV further than when burned in the small heat engine in your car. That's those laws of physics again.
Bottom line: Gasoline/diesel/natural gas all deliver more BTUs than solar/wind. Always.

Not everyone has a good setup for charging at home. A lot of people don't actually.

quote:Nah.
The biggest drawback to them is they're the antithesis of "green"
quote:We should probably get on top of that game, then, because China isn't going to stop making a shitload of money doing it if we stick to ICE.
and China controls the refining of lithium and the manufacture of lithium ion batteries.
Smart countries recognize that EVs are going to drastically reduce transportation and shipping costs (which lubricates the rest of the economy), and that they allow energy independence at the national down to the individual level. If we miss that boat, we are going to be fricked.

quote:Well I damn sure don't have a gas pump at home. Worst case everyone has a 110v outlet, which can give you 30-40 miles overnight. Depending on your driving habits, that can stretch out your stops at a charging station from once a week to only once a month or less. Throw in a little charging at work and you might never have to stop at a charging station.
Not everyone has a good setup for charging at home. A lot of people don't actually.
The point is we will need far fewer charging stations than we have gas pumps. Do you disagree?

My breaker box is totally full. I'm not sure if I could free up a circuit by using a split breaker or not. If I can't I'm looking at a second breaker box or replacing the current one before I can put in another 240 to charge a car.

I don't have a problem with switching to Electric as long as they are as high quality as what we have now and the infrastructure is there to support it
But we all know that won't happen and it will be awful

Yeah but you can fill said vehicle up in 5 minutes at dozens of places near me vs sitting in the Trader Joe's parking lot for an hour. I'm not anti EV at all. I just think they're not a comparable replacement for an ICE vehicle for many consumers at this point.

My truck doesn't fit in my garage. I think it technically fits and you can close the door but it has to be precision parked within like 4" of the wall. I have no interest in driving a sedan

My predictions: We will have to go all in on nuclear power.
I agree. I think we start going nuclear within the next 10 years. The demand for EV and hybrids is just too high. Having said that, I don't foresee ICE going away in our lifetimes.
I've come around on EV's lately. Not for me yet, but my sis(no pics) in Dallas has a brand new Hyundai hybrid. She's a nurse driving to work, taking kids everywhere, going to the gym, meeting friends. Then she just plugs it in at the end of the day. It's pretty fun to drive too. Its weird to stop at a light and hear birds chirping.

Manufacturers announcing they'll be only manufacturing 100% battery powered cars by 2035.
They can say that all they want. One I think they’re full of shite. Two it’ll be another few decades before that trickles down to lower income levels of society to completely phase out the used ICE vehicles.

quote:So the trade-off is spend 5 minutes every week at a gas station, or spend 10 seconds every day (1 minute per week) plugging in your EV at home. People act like long charge times are such a hassle, but they ignore the time wasted at gas stations that simply doesn't have to be.

It takes longer to answer the stupid fricking questions at every gas pump than it does to plug in an EV.

The two cars I am considering to replace my MINI JCW, a new JCW and a Porsche Cayman, you can still get with manual transmissions.

40% of homes don't have a garage or carport. And that's not even taking into account apartments where you'd be sharing that connection with hundreds of others if they even have one.

People who can’t support that charging shouldn’t get EVs then.
Also, you don’t need a garage or carport. I’ve had friends with EVs visit and they just run a cord into my garage. I don’t give up my garage spots for them to do that, the car just sits outside charging.

do i have to pick now?
i don’t care if the vehicle is I.C.E. or battery powered. Does it fulfill my needs in a vehicle? Is it affordable? Is it dependable?
I work in O&G and i could care less. O&G isn’t going anywhere in our lifetimes and anyone who believes it is, is simply ignorant. I also love technology and enjoy watching the EV tech advance.
I know that really makes it hard for some of you to put me in one camp or another, but life isn’t black and white, neither is this conversation.
