I guess the answer to this probably varies by job and company.

I work at a large Fortune 20 corporate HQ, and while our department's culture is very laid-back and personable, there's still the aura that you can't really let loose and be yourself at happy hours.

We have one this afternoon and it seems like an extension of work. Just stupid small talk and commentary on work-related matters over one or two beers.

Meanwhile I see stuff on social media from some of my friends who work for smaller companies where they do keg stands and rip beers at the office. I couldn't imagine doing that around anyone I work with.

I drink around whoever happens to be present when I drink.

Hell no. Keep the flask in the desk drawer, out of sight. Only take it out when you know that nobody is coming into your office.

We don’t drink at the office, but people will absolutely drink outside the office with one another and will get drunk.

Every work event outside work includes alcohol. It’s the only way to get people to attend.

If we are with clients we will let them lead. If they want to get a little drunk, we will too. If they want to sip a Chardonnay for 2 hours, then that’s fine too.

No....part of me wishes I worked in a mad men type office with a few decanters by my desk...but I'm 100% sure I'd become an alcoholic

Social drinking is oftentimes part of my job. So yes, I drink in front of my coworkers and clients on occasion.

Define let loose

I'll throw them back with folks higher than me in the hierarchy, but I'm not getting out of control or anything. But candor/honesty definitely increases.

In fairness we don't have a lot of people younger than 25 or so, so almost everyone has families/professional lives and they're not going to get completely obliterated around their peers regardless.

Change the culture. Bring the 8 shooter octopus beer bong next time. Throw some blow on the copy machine. Grab asses.

I do but it's the same as any other situation really. No one knows I'm pouring vodka in my coffee on Christmas morning either. You do what you have to do...

I did when I was younger but now that I understand things much better I say "No". Loose lips sink ships!

Compared to Louisiana? Probably so.

That said I don't think Atlanta is all that buttoned up anymore on stuff like this (although where I work isn't exactly edgy).

It’s a commonality amongst working in a start-up environment. Many start-ups have kegerators and rotating taps at the office.

I feel like people in this environment grow to hate it and people outside of it want it

The reality is it'll be entirely dependent on who you work with. We drink together like once/twice a month for an hour or two at a time. That's perfect. I look forward to it but don't want it to happen all the time.
