Do you carry emergency cash in your wallet?

Do any of you keep a large bill tucked away in your wallet for emergencies? I keep a $100 bill folded up and stashed in one of the rarely-used slots in my wallet. I generally don't carry much cash, but I always keep the 100 in case I get in a bind. Even if I have no other cash I will just use a card rather than using the emergency cash.

My grandfather always did it, so I guess I picked it up from him. Changing wallets and I'm considering whether to keep it in there. I guess If I happened to lose my wallet, I'd be out my credit cards, license, etc. but then I'd be out an extra $100 for no real reason.

Legitimate question so I'm looking for a few actual responses among the standard smartass comments

ETA: This thread has been way more informative than I expected. I appreciate the insight. I think I'm going to keep the hundred tucked in there. I figure it's not taking up any space and I'd rather have it and not need it than vice versa.

Yes. I call it my debit card.

For emergencies? Like not being able to find an ATM almost literally on every corner?

I do carry cash with me almost always, but it's not for emergencies.

I mean we all have a debit card but if you get stranded or something I figure it might be more practical to have cold hard cash rather than a card.

I carry a few hundred in cash that I never use. A 100 ones in my console.

I only use my credit card for everything.

Yes, I do. But I am likely closer to your Gramps age than yours. I also keep some money in a sock drawer and carry money to spend. I have used a debit card maybe twice in my life.

If there is a power outage due to natural emergencies or an attack on our power grid I don't think ATMs will work, will they?

I stash a little cash in my car. I forget my wallet some times and find myself on the road with no money or cards.

I understand the mentality and I always carry cash. But the flaw with your plan is that unless you are buying something over $50 or so, very few places take $100 dollar bills..

It's not a bad idea. My bank put a stop on my debit card twice in the last few years because of suspicious activity (identity theft sort of) so I was left without a card until I went to the bank a got a new card with a new number. I still had a couple of credit cards I could have use but don't really like to use them.

Yeah I always worry about this. And as another poster mentioned, when my grandfather was doing this cash was probably much more widely used.

Thanks y'all. Had been wondering and figured I'd ask the OT.

If this happened every store or gas station will be closed anyway.

Yep. This was life for a couple days after Gustav. We couldn't leave our street due to downed trees, let alone find an open store to take our cash. The stores reopened when they got power.

I try to keep a couple $20 bills on me, but they mostly end up being spent for random collections at work.

In all likelihood you are right. Maybe I am just an old fool. I don't care to be at the total mercy of others. I don't wear a tin foil hat but IF the SHTF for one of a dozen reasons, I like the ability to pay someone to open his store, buy something from someone who has what I need, etc.

Just being overly cautious, I am sure.

I carry $15 at most. I'm really gonna piss off any mugger that tries to rob me.

Here's a card I'm going to cancel as soon as you run away.

Then, I'm also not lying to hobos when I say I don't have much cash on me.

I don't know you and your avatar grosses me out but please don't be so foolish as to actually say this to a mugger. He/she may take steps to keep you from cancelling it.

For some reason, it does not bother me to say to them, "I don't have anything for you."
