I keep about $500 in the rat hole part of my wallet. The only place I've encountered where cash wasn't accepted - the Hampton Inn in West Monroe. They adamantly refused to take cash when I checked out.

Not true. I've seen stores open without power after a hurricane and only taking cash. It's why I keep a few hundred in one's and five's in my hurricane prep.

I typically carry 50 in my wallet at all times and have an emergency $100 bill in my truck in case I need it at some point.

Hell they don't even want to change out cash for coins in order to wash clothes there.

He won't drive anything that's less than 20 years old. Dirty, beat up old pickups and SUVs that would be unlikely candidates for break-ins. Also, he's one of these people who keep just enough room in the vehicle for the driver. He has so much junk in there it would take a thief half a day to find his stash.

He would act as if the world was ending if the cash were lost in a vehicle fire or something but in truth he'd never miss it. A $10K loss for him wouldn't be much of a lick.

I don't like carrying cash because it encourages me to snack from the vending machine...

But the flaw with your plan is that unless you are buying something over $50 or so, very few places take $100 dollar bills..

They can't do that.

No need. I work at a bank and there's ATMs and grocery stores every 1-2 miles if I need to get quick cash.

I thought the same thing but didn't want to derail a second thread this morning....One is typically my limit.

Haven't bought anything out of a machine in about 6-7 years. They aren't card friendly nowadays?

That's why you need scrubs like me to step in and attempt it every now and then. Businesses can have rules about cards and checks, but they pretty much have to take cash if they have a physical location. I can see them not having enough change for a hundred, but they have to accept it. Whether or not you want to buy enough stuff, in an emergency situation, to get proper change back, is on you.

I always carry a $100 bill incase someone shows up with an 8 ball and I don't have a straw. That would be the only emergency i can think of.

After Katrina I went into a gas station that was open to get ice, was cash only.

Eta:Probably the only time I've ever seen an owner/cashier put down his shotgun to give me change.

Not to derail this thread... But the Federal reserve disagrees with you...

quote:

There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person, or an organization must accept currency or coins as payment for goods or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash unless there is a state law which says otherwise.
