Do you buy the idea that human memory can be falsified or “created”?

I came across a ted talk on my Facebook feed today regarding this topic

Elizabeth loftus: how reliable is your memory?

If the research she discusses in the video is accurate, it seems like it could upend things like the criminal justice system and could make me question if what I remember is even accurate!

It's not just misremembering details, it is "remembering" things that never happened and didn't remotely happen.

What is your opinion on this? Is human memory something that is malleable in your opinion?

Didn't read but "eye witness" testimony is up there with the most unreliable testimony

Don't need to read; human memory is shite. It's extremely easy to influence, and then the brain can't tell the difference between what reality and fiction. People would bet their lives that they experienced something that flat out didn't happen.

Yea, my OP isn't about people being forgetful or getting the color wrong when remembering a shirt someone was wearing or something.

It's about memory literally creating entire scenarios that never happened. It's kind of creepy.

I honestly believe that the mind stores its "memories" in ways that it will jumble up things.
For example, I may distinctly recall as a young child that I rode a train to visit my grandmother, even seeing her at the train station. However, that never happened. I did ride a train, but to go on another trip. I did meet my grandmother at a train station, but that is when she had ridden the train, not me.
I guess my brain just stored two separate events, possibly years apart, under a file of "trains" in its mind and ultimately combined the two events into one.

The fact that the Mandela Effect exists is all the evidence you need that human memory shouldn't be trusted for anything important

But taking this to a metaphysical level, this might mean my entire life as I know it was something completely then what actually happened. Our past is a huge part of our reality/existence.

The real fascinating discussion should be about the difference between what your subconscious remembers vs. your "active" memory.

The subconscious is almost photographic in it's memory ability, it's just not accessible through conventional means. Stuff like dreams, hypnotism, and EEGs can somewhat access them, but they're there hidden in all of us.

The different areas of the brain used to perform actions and recall certain things has always fascinated me, and the fact that you basically have a lockbox of photographic memories stored away by themselves blows my mind (pun intended).

Hang around the elderly or medically mentally "disrupted" and you can observe the creation of false memories firsthand. Trauma can also be used to create false memories, both physical and mental trauma. Think Stockholm Syndrome.

Do you even MKUltra? Don't reject your programming, beta kitten, or they'll turn the juice up next session.

Y'all are in agreement. The Mandela effect is a way for dumb asses who don't realize memory is faulty to explain away their faulty memory. Anyone who thought Mandela died in prison is an uninformed idiot. There was such a huge deal about his being released.

People so this shite everyday to themselves. Tell a lie enough, and long enough and it becomes their truth.
