We rightly demonize rap for its lyrics that glorify drugs, murder, womanizing etc. but we conveniently ignore it in country music.
I love Chris Knight, but Down the River is straight up about a revenge killing for his brother's murder, and it winds up with him plotting a second murder.
People excuse this sort of thing as storytelling and playing a character in country and rock, but act like rap is 100% real life. Rap has the same storytelling and playing of characters aspect as any other music.
A lot of people miss this in someone like Kendrick Lamar. On Good Kid, MAAD City, he raps as a teenager making stupid decisions in the face of peer pressure. I've seen people post lyrics from that like he's endorsing things like smoking weed and guns, when the point is pretty much the opposite.

Anyone who has poured through Kendrick lyrics and thinks all rap music is unstimulating and uninteresting is an idiot. Feel free to not like his sound, but his stuff is plenty meaningful.

Do you believe rap/hip hop music has been a net positive or negative for society?
Seriously?

quote:Many of the songs talked about killing, adultery, fighting, drugs and alcohol.
Did three quarters of the songs talk about killing people and shoving your dick in a bitch while selling drugs? I know Johnny Cash shot a man to watch him die in one song but I can't recall Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubbs and Ray Price crooning about the time they nutted on a bitch assed ho and kept it real by killing cops.

Rap has definitely had a negative influence on society.
Also, anyone that listens to rap is young and stupid, or just plain stupid.

Negative. .as a white kid I listened to it for the beats.
. To me it seems many black kids listen to it as a life plan.
Member when there were lyrics like
"Considered a fool because you dropped out of high school"
Or
"Before you reup buy a laptop, go into business for yourself and set some goals"
Now it's all about making Crack money.
I listen to it, but inner city kids are hurt by it

This is absolutely the case. Anyone arguing otherwise is just being disingenuous

there is some socially conscious hip hop, but as far a “net”, probably a loss.

I honestly don't think music has much effect on society either positive or negative. Generation after generation always has some hysteria about music corrupting the youth...but I can't say I have ever seen any evidence that this actually occurs. I think music is something catchy that sticks in your mind, but I am not sure the majority of people ever even think about the meaning of the associated lyrics.

Just like drugs or alcohol, to the weak it’s like krypton. Definitely a negative.
And I love hip hop. Been listening for 30 plus years. I do like the beats more than the words though.

It’s not the actual lyrics that 14 y/o’s are affected by, its the lifestyle portrayed by the rappers. Kids without a stable environment or strong guidance by an adult male (particularly boys) are compromised by this life goal.

100% Negative and has been since gangsta rap hit in 1991.

Blame the record companies and producers. They realized in the late 80s that rap was cheap to produce, being that no bands or musical instruments were needed and all that was required was a dude that could rhyme or talk fast.
The original definition of RAP was an unorganized conversation...think about it.
