I agree, they are Ivy league clubs that think more of themselves than they should. They make money on their degrees as they should, but nothing more.

So they were secret at one time (the masons)?
This was years ago but a girl I know texted me and asked me what did I know about the Masons. I told her the only thing I know is there they have a building about 5 miles from my house and sometimes they do fund raisers.
She told me that a coworker of hers husband was joining or joined.. And she was upset because he wouldn't tell her anything about it. I remember thinking "I bet membership will go down and it will be ruined by women".. I just meant that life is different. The family dynamics are different and having to keep something secret from wives will cause problems..

People are secretive to inflate their sense of self worth. This feeds conspiracy theories which are often not true in the sense of an actual conspiracy. Some secrecy is needed to do good and some secrecy allows the bad to profit and gain power.
Maybe better to look at how a volatile combination of arrogance and entitlement allows actual actions to be viewed by normal people as conspiratorial.

Y'all know, don't you, that all those posters who say secret societies don't exist are IN secret societies.
I tried starting one years ago, calling it NASCAR. The National Association of Southerners who Care About Rednecks. It was going to be a Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton type org. that would go after Big Business for discriminating against/dissing rednecks and twist their knackers for big bucks. But, I discovered most people who discriminate against/diss rednecks are... rednecks themselves!

You’re very correct, but I recently read that about him and have been waiting on a thread I could post that fun fact in. Figured this one would do.
That said… there is probably a secret society within Bohemian… you know those guys are weird enough to have a secret club within their secret club.

In my hometown there was a not so secret society of three gasoline wholesalers. They'd meet for coffee every Monday morning and fix the gas price for the week.
