Dogs are pack animals that are very perceptive of emotions, and can share close bonds with their owners.

They've also evolved to a higher level of intelligence due to socialization with humans.

Or are their whole life’s focus completely centered around food, water, and shelter? I have a hard time believing that they have no sensitivities to emotional thoughts.

Well, mammals at least have pretty strong maternal feelings. That is very probably evolution driven (survival of an offspring carrying the genes of the parent), but it's not strictly a survival instinct among those you mentioned.

Also, primates such as chimps do undertake political types of actions, getting allies to challenge for leadership, etc. Again, probably evolutionary based but not strictly a survival of the individual type of action.

I don't know that any animals other than man have gone so far as to bury their dead, especially with ornamentation like flowers or red ocher or shells or something. That would be a true sign they were thinking of deeper things.

When i read the thread title, i first thought "man, i am goingto give some really witty weed pot smoking joke reply"

But i actually think this as well. I know my dog senses emotion. Why not other animals?

I think animals like to entertain themselves. That’s not a basic need. Squirrels like to play games with cars, dolphins like to chase boats, apes play in trees, elephants play pranks.

Wild animals don't have the luxury to focus on anything more than survival, except for procreation.

I don’t know about those thoughts, but they probably enjoy just gazing at the landscape.

I thought I read somewhere that animals are mostly concerned with looking for the bare necessities.

Some animals may have simple emotions but no complex ones like remorse or jealousy.

While I agree, this doesn’t mean they’ve developed consciousness.

I think animals like dolphins, primates, and elephants certainly think beyond their necessities.

shite, we know that dolphins frick for fun and not procreation.

Elephants visit burial sites of family members years later.

etc.

Does a fox overlook a sunset and think it’s a beautiful site?

Do birds ever look around and wonder where they came from?

Does a Tiger ever feel bad about killing another creature?

No.

No.

No.

No.

No.

That doesn't mean that no animal has any emotion. Some animals, especially social species, have evolved emotions for the same reasons humans have (though not to the same extent).
