Are you serious? Parents are in their phones more than kids are these days. I see it every day driving too. People can't stay between the lines and i look at them and they are looking down. I see it 3-4 times a day it feels like.
All the convenience is at the palm of your hand now compared to the 80's and 90's. Anything can be delivered to your door. All of this makes people lazier overall. Back in the day people knew their neighbors. I hardly see anybody outside anymore

Maybe sports related but that's just the parents wanting to be part of a something. Probably doesn't have anything to do with the kid

Laughably untrue. Or perhaps you're projecting

Then onto sports the biggest deal was the pizza party after

When I was a kid, the only sports I played outside of school were maybe stickball using a tennis ball and the street corners for bases, or basketball up against the garage on a uneven driveway. But just us, no adults involved. Do kids not organize their own games anymore?

They live with less physical challenges (in person bullies, fending for themselves outside for large stretches of the day, fixing stuff, farm chores), but they live with WAY more social pressure (permanence of online activity, cancel culture, cyber bullying, zero privacy, helicopter parenting), economic pressure (no disposable income, fewer jobs available, higher costs of education and car expenses), and completely polarized school environments (either zero expectations and zero discipline or safety or super high-pressure with mountains of homework daily).

I see the exact opposite. Parents expect so much more and out of kids now.

Parents expect, but don't want to put in the work.

Try coaching t-ball these days. At practices, it was like pulling teeth just to get these parents out on the field to throw a ball with their kid or stand in the outfield because we were short a few kids.
Yes, the parents were there
Yes, the parents were expecting success

The parents just didn't want to participate in their kids' lives. They simply wanted someone else to do the work.

Marching Band has seemed the same. Yes, the parents show up, but parent participation is sitting in the stands on their phones. The same few parents do all of the volunteer work while the rest simply drop off and pick up.

Is it possible your son's school is harder than the school you attended?

hell my 5th grader (Texas public schools) is doing the same Algebra and Geometry as I did in 10th grade Louisiana public schools

My Texas public school 5th grade son is absolutely not doing algebra and the geometry is not advanced. Algebra is not offered. This is Katy ISD.

Society is way more complex today than young kids were ever meant to handle.

I don’t know if hard/soft is the right word, but they are growing up in a tornado of social expectations that has never existed in human history.

My nieces and nephews go to the exact same school I did

At. Aloysius 2nd grade in 1994 looks like mouth drooling coursework compared to St. Aloysius 2nd grade work in 2025

1970's/1980's Kid: Dad, I'm feeling stressed and overwhelmed about living up to the expectations that have been placed on me.

1970's/1980's Dad: What kind of gay arse talk is that? Man up, pussy, or I'll give you something to cry about.

Nah. Most kids are Charmin soft now. They cannot handle any adversity because they've never truly faced any.

Would you like me to go to his school and stare at him through the window?

This seems more like a trope than something that's happening in real life. I'm with pride87 on this one. There's pressure on kids today everywhere you turn. Increased load of school work, expectations in sports, the added pressure of your first 18 years essentially being college prep. Add the permanence of social media/online presence to that and your kid is being crushed by societal pressure.

In the 1970s your dad could pat you on the back and advise you to walk into old man Jim's machine shop to give him a firm handshake and ask for a job, which you could afford a mortgage payment by working. Now you're basically expected to have a degree to work at a deli counter

Kids today are stressed about things they shouldn't be so worried about but they are also lacking exposure to basic life skills.
