CDC found that 1 out of every 36 children has autism. This is a significant increase from the 2021 estimate of 1 in 44, which was a big jump from 1 in 110 in 2006.

Autism is a weird one. It’s always been around, but in the not so distant past Autistic individuals used to just be shut in their room and not really talked about, and they were simply labeled “retarded.”

As more people have studied it there is a greater understanding autism and it isn’t shunned like it was in the past.

The overall increase in autism diagnoses has probably more to do with waaaay more kids are tested now than they were 25-30 years ago. The more people you test the more cases you find.

My great grandpa worked coal mines chewed tobacco and smoked and died at 96 never bitching about a little black lung or cancer! Must be a sham by them doctor types.

Autism is more prevalent because they widened the diagnosis criteria and it includes many on the spectrum

My late wife’s cousin has it and it is just terrible to see her feeling fine and within a half hour she is just hurting so badly. It is a horrible disease.

I think fibromyalgia is simply an undiagnosed neurological/muscoloskeletal condition, meaning the cause hasn’t been found yet.

Having said that, doctors lump a lot of things as fibromyalgia when they really are t that.

Don't read into this too much. Autism is a fairly new diagnosis, and since it's a "spectrum" disorder, many people will fit into it on both sides.

This is not to say that autism is a new issue at all. It's more likely that these children were just diagnosed as having mental retardation or maybe they didn't receive a diagnosis at all. They were just set aside in a special school or mental hospital.

The Godmother of my daughter suffers from it. It's no joke.

Go tell her your view on it and then watch her slap the taste out of your mouth.

Grown men making fun of mentally disabled children is about as low as this board can get, honestly.

Saying that things are often mis-diagnosed and acknowledging that many modern ailments are exaggerated is not making fun of children.

Autism is a real thing, obviously. But it has also become a catch-all that is not always accurate. Same with ADHD, etc.

Doesn't mean any specific child doesn't have it, not does it minimize the struggles their parents face.

Everyone should want medical accuracy.

Very true. The widening is all a result of the studying and understanding of Autism.

Now if you want to have a conversation about whether or not the definition of Autism is now too broad, I would definitely agree.

Been in the medical field 30 plus years and have yet to meet a person with fibromyalgia that wasn't whacked in the head.
