Had a vet ask to do 650 bucks worth of tests on a midaged dog. I asked her what specific action will she take on adverse results. Response was she will watch the progress. No treatment.
I took the loved dog and went home.

No. Private equity is buying vets.

Don't go to a vet that doesn't do large animals. Vets that get an endless stream of cockapoos and golden doodles know wives will want every last test and treatment done, just in case.

I had a dog get a terrible gut infection thing. It was real touch and go, but four grand later, she pulled through.
To the vet’s credit, when two months later the same dog started showing clear signs of a brain tumor, the vet handed me a script for prednisone and said call us when you’re ready to make the call. There were other treatments available, but she wasn’t going to offer them.
Dog was 14.

So sorry to hear. They teach us so much in life and in their passing.

Vets don’t have the ability to cure much of anything and neither do doctors for humans. If you think about it, surgery can cure some problems. Other than that, if your own immune system can’t solve the problem, you’re left with symptom control.

They are very good at removing your wealth. They specialize in guilt management.
I kid. Dr Heno on Maple Street saved my childhood dog when she was hit by a car. The metairie animal clinic saved a kitten mauled by a dog.
So yeah. Like any doctor they can save some pets. I do think SOME Vets use guilt to get people to waste exorbitant amounts of money on losing battles.

How many patients would be cured if they only saw their primary doctor? What’s the money difference in research for human illness vs. animal?

5, 10k worth of "treatment" has been invested

Wait, you spent $4k on a 14 year old do? The average life span of dog is less than that.

Didn’t read your text. But the answer is no. They string your pet along with medication and treatment until the pet ultimately dies
Sounds like they took a page out of the medical industry.

Old school vets will. Now a days vets kind of mill the dogs and if the pass, the vet says to get a new one.

I’d love to hear this reasoning

After several weeks/months of treatment they always say "well nothing we can do" and the pet is ultimately put down anyway.
I think a lot of it is probably, yeah we can probably save your animal's life but it's going to cost 5 figures, none of it will be covered by insurance. If you have the money, you can get whatever ridiculous treatment you want for your pet. My BIL is loaded and has crazy expensive hunting dogs. He has spent absurd amounts of money on surgeries most people simply wouldn't consider.

Ear infections and hot spot dressings;
They’re pain in the asses about heartworm rx and no vet I’ve been to can “see” what’s on the scans/ultrasounds clearly. Even though the tumor is bulging.
You’ll have to be sent to a vet surgeon for the serious ligament repairs.

Yep. The gastritis gut things are a different thing to deal with.
Go in first when it seems minor. One day and some antibiotics. Gets a little worse, turns to two days, etc.
Day one in no way seemed a “just go ahead and put her down” situation.

I literally cried more on the way home than I did for the familial matriarch.
I stayed with her, hugging and petting her till the end, and the light leaving her eyes still haunts me.
It’s amazing how much pets mean to us.

Populist nonsense.
If the people on this thread whining about this were actually told by the vet, "There's no point is doing anything, your pet will probably die anyway," then they'd cry and complain about that because they didn't even try (and probably make up a motive like, "The case obviously wasn't be worth enough to them, so they just kicked us out.")
People kind of suck these days.

In bigger towns and cities they rarely do. The best thing you can do is go to a vet in small rural town. They will actually “fix” your pet, and charge a lot less in the process.

I found a new vet when mine wasn’t answering concerns I had re my dog’s weight gain and lethargy. For no reason. Plus some other stuff. She took one look and said she was testing thyroid. Boom. She had barely any thyroid function. Thyroid pill fixed her quickly and she lost 20 lbs in one month. Reverted back to old self, ears and skin cleared up. She’s also done good by my other dogs. I like my vet. The old vet just kept telling me to add green beans to dog food and reduce the kibble.
