I had a 7 hour layover in Paris. Stayed in Airline Club the entire time. I’m tempted, but do not count.

All I know is I had a layover in Moscow once. Never want to go there again.

That depends, who are you trying to impress?

This seems to be the correct answer. Didn't we just do this thread a week or two ago?

And I've never understood people who try to say it doesn't count. You're literally in that state, so it counts as having been there or visited it. Sure, you aren't seeing the sights and partaking in the state's activities, but if that's what "counts" then people either need to change the question from "Have you been there?" to something else, or they need to petition Merriam-Webster to change the definition of "visit."

I had a layover in Chicago one time but I did not think of that as a visit. You at least need to walk around in the place a little bit.

It counts but you have to specify it was a layover.
If my body flies over it then I been there.

As long as you can back it up with an experience.

Them: "You've been to California eh? What was your favorite part?"

You: "Well, I had a nice pinot at Sammys in Terminal 4 at LAX."

Them: "Right on man, California sucks."

Doesn’t matter where you go or how long you stay, but you have to leave the airport for it to count as a been to.

I took a train from Chicago to Denver. Passed through Nebraska. Never stopped. I can claimed I’ve been to Nebraska?

Does NOT count. I've flown through ATL way more times that I care to admit. If anyone ever asked me whether I've been to Atlanta, I'd count LSU's first two SEC titles under Saban and one training trip there for work. Otherwise, I don't count any of the 100+ times I've had layovers in that shithole.

OTOH, LAX is problematic because the last time I was flying through there, the flight left early, and I ended up having to spend the night. Basically, I sat around the airport on standby until 11PM, left and went across the street to a hotel, slept until 4AM, and came back to the airport for an epic 4-leg trip from LAX to BTR (including stops in Denver and Salt Lake City which I do not count as visits).

No, with a caveat: If the layover was remarkable for some reason you can count it [For instance, your 4 hour layover gets extended to 6 hours at LAX and you end up spending the extra 2 hours pounding beers with The Rock in the Admirals' Club]

I go stingy on this one: 1 night in a hotel + 1 local experience (could be restuarant, bar, or a tourist site).

No, you have to leave the airport and not just for an international transfer.

Technically yes, but spiritually no.

I'd say that doesn't "count" unless you have an experience or two away from the airport.

My passport was stamped in Paris on the way to and from Spain.

I assume that’s because I “entered” and “departed” the EU there.
