T shirts were "undergarment" like your Underoo's and not meant to be seen when out in public. They protected you more expensive outer garments and made them last longer because of the added expense.

In the early 90s I'd rock a wife beater under a white tee shirt as an undershirt shirt under my Tommy Hilfiger polos

I wear a crew neck t-shirt under any shirt with a collar. Normally, the tshit’s white but I have a few black ones to wear under black shirts.
Sometimes, I wear them backwards so the tshirt rides up extra high.
Why? Because it’s what a grown-up man working in a professional environment does.

I don't understand the wifebeater shirts. Why wear that with no under arm protection?
