I had a good friend whose son was a decent ball player. My buddy was dead set against travel ball, until his son got a letter from a local travel ball coach, inviting him (for the low price of $1,700) to be on the team.

Long story short, he had to borrow the money to join the team, and about six months after the season ended, him and his wife had to file bankruptcy for all the credit card debt they had rung up.

And the kid never played an inning after high school.

If your buddy thought $1,700 was a lot of money and had to borrow it then I hate to tell you but Tournament Ball isn't his problem.

He probably had all kinds of other things. Truck, House, Hunting camp, ATV/UTV, Boat and a wife that spent too much money.

You seem to be blaming Tournament Ball for a couple that had major issues.

Man I don't know, but I am convinced that 90% of these kids parents are parents who either played baseball and was on the bench more than they played or they didn't play, but wished they were good enough to do so and now that they have have kids playing, they have all became experts at the game and no one has told them that its better for their kids to play multiple sports than to get burned out on one sport.

And that many of these dads would rather encourage their kid to continue playing hurt than to wait to make sure its not a serious injury that could have an impact on them long term, if they do more damage to it so that they can go to work and brag to people about how their kid got hurt, but stayed in the game.

another old as frick person talking about how everyone shouldnt play travel ball.

NEWSFLASH....things change, things evolve....many times for the betterment of the skill....and sometimes that means some kids are left behind.

Even still every parent I know whose kids played travel ball gave it up and did fine or they are doing fine. I work with people as we speak heavily involved in travel ball and unless you mean things have changed from 2022 until 2023 I stand by what I wrote....if what you mean is it has evolved in a year to a point that it is perfectly suited for everyone involved I would say wait for 2024. It no doubt is good for some and for some it is great for a while and then gets to be too much. It can't be fun for everyone...if you and yours enjoy it god bless...even if you are apparently a young as frick person who can't comprehend what you've read...you will learn to do that by the time your old as frick.

Lsu777,

So most of the summer you drag your non sports kid to the field basically every weekend to watch his/her siblings play. If not you and your spouse split up or you have other people watch your kid because you're too busy being at a fricking ball field all summer every weekend. I don't see how people with multiple children do it, especially if both parents work or if one of the parents has to maybe work on weekends. It absolutely passes me off that this is the only option for kids to play competitive sports. Can't go play BREC or YMCA because it's too ghetto and the other small rec leagues are filled with kids so bad that it's almost impossible for your kid to actually learn or get better.

If your buddy let a night at a Hampton Inn and a pizza break him, he was doomed with or without ball playing

My kid played travel ball last year and it was pathetic what was going on. Parents pushing their kids way too hard and living through them.

Whats worse is that they get into rec leagues because they think they are going to dominate and they ruin those too. Got one kid that plays for a travel team and his dad is mad that I have him in the outfield. Well he's only the 6th best player on the team. he thought because he played for a travel ball team that he would be treated like jesus. he's a mediocre player at best. rec and travel should be separate. dont do both please.

This sums it up. Last year my nephew played school ball (starts at 4th grade, he was in the 4th grade), rec ball then travel ball. From February to the end of July he was playing baseball.

This year he didn't want to play travel ball so he played school ball which has ended and plays rec ball which is over this week.

He isn't the best player, but he is more into hunting than sports, but just seeing and hearing from his parents about everything that goes on, especially within travel ball, its insane. Some of these parents are complete idiots.

Coaches who favor their kids are the worst. The coach my nephew had last year for travel ball would move his kid to a different position anytime he messed up. It was always an infield position. He would have the most athletic kid on the team in center or right while his son was at short stop, then moved his kid, who was maybe the 3rd or 4th shortest kid on the team to 1st. The inning he moved him to first the 3rd baseman threw it over his head.. Because the kid who he replaced and normally played first was the tallest kid on the team.

The shortest kid on the team was this black kid. He was a really good center fielder. The kid would make unbelievable catches. One game a lot of balls were going to center field. After the kid who normally plays center made some great catches and was getting a lot of action. The coach moves his son to center and puts the center fielder on 3rd. They were winning the game.

The 3rd basemen man an error, his son missed a pop fly.. It threw everything out of order and they lost. I don't know if things like this are common with other travel teams, but that's not playing ball. You can't play as a team with a coach like that. Its crazy.

I have heard the theory that the reason so many college baseball players are getting injured is that they are worn out by the time they get to college.

he plays sports, just not travel ball. they go watch him play. he is old enough to not have to go if he deosnt want to and its not even close to every weekend. we have 2 tournaments in june

plenty of times where we have to split having 2 in it. or in the spring sometimes we send 10 year with my dad, she takes youngest and i go with the oldest to his track meet. then i go to the baseball game after.

quote:

I don't see how people with multiple children do it, especially if both parents work or if one of the parents has to maybe work on weekends.

we dont work on weekends and we have grandparents that go to a ton of the games too.

if you live in BR, you shouldnt have to travel far if at all. might not see best competition every weeekned but you can certainly find a team that plays only locally to BR

and yea we just make it work. not gonna take the opportunity to play competitive sports in HS away from my kids because..."it sucks" or "its too hard" or "its too much time" like so many here complain about

its not for everyone...but i can say that it is almost impossible to play HS baseball in South Louisiana without playing some form of travel ball and really if you arent playing high aaa or majors ball...yea its hard as hell. sure you can make smaller school but someplace like the bigger public schools around BR like St Amant, Zachary, Central, live oak, dutchtown or catholic, uhigh, parkview etc etc yea good luck with that.

bottomline is the old rec model really wasnt a good developmental model either. playing 2 games a week for 6 weeks and playing all stars and then puttin the ball down for 8 months was not a good developmental model

do i wish there was some middle ground...i do but there isnt and one person taking a stand just means their kid gets left behind and doesnt change anything.

I'm all for kids getting out of the house, away from Ipads, xbox, etc. I think some of these parents get duped by unscrupulous coaches, who know less about baseball than I do, just to earn a quick buck. Promising to get their child in front of college scouts.

I've always believed, if a child is good enough, the scouts will find him.

To be fair brother bear, it does appear you’re partially illiterate.

ETA You not being able to properly spell grammar is perfection.
