re: Do 90% of these kids really need to be on these competitive travel ball teams?

Since every other kid is getting reps all year long, you child will fall behind no matter how naturally gifted they are if they don't join a team. Baseball is the one sport where a kid can't just be a better athlete than others so its get the reps and improve or fall behind.
Give me the kids that play multiple sports throughout the year than the kids who only play baseball.

Agree that rec ball only is not enough reps. That is the problem we have, as our kids are not travel, and have a hard time keeping up with the kids who have the benefit of constant organized baseball. This is just an observation and not a complaint, though, as our kids can start playing on their school teams by sixth grade, so they will get the more frequent reps starting then. And then once you get into high school, a player's growth and physical development comes more into play, and that can be a great equalizer if a kid did not play travel when younger. I can think of several of these travel kids who are "hot stuff" right now but are going to be greatly outgrown by others at the end of the day.
Of course, there are other ways to go about it
I think lsu777’s disconnect with the board, with all due respect, is because he’s in Lake Charles (I believe) and baseball is just a totally different animal over there. Not every place is like that.

How dare those families spend time doing the things they like?

all. Correct. The sports facilities breed this. *cough* Traction *cough* I wonder why???
Traction didn’t build that complex (cypress mounds) and it was built with the league s during the week driving the revenue source along with renting fields. They would play tournaments as an added revenue source as that format became more popular.. Traction took over the management and used it to expand their stable of teams, completely watering down most of the teams they put out..

Helicopter parents living vicariously through their kids hoping that it's their meal ticket to fame and fortune when in all reality your kid sucks and you pushing him/her is gonna make your kid(s)hate/resent you .
I deal w/helicopter parents all the time officiating high school baseball and football. They are the absolute fricking worst.

Just dropped Nayden at the cages. We’re getting work in, while your boys are getting soft.
Starting coaches pitch next year and looking to dominate.

This. All of this.
Specialization is killing youth sports and it has a cumulative effect to the higher levels as well

Total money grab scam

Y’all are crazy with that. Playing multiple sports doesn’t do shite for a young athlete that being very good at one doesn’t.
My son was soccer only until 7th grade and he’s got 6 varsity letters in 4 sports …he’s studying for finals in 10th grade…will play D1 in one…won state titles in two others and…really I just don’t understand people’s logic with this falsehood.

He placed 3rd in state in the 4x400 as an 8th grader, team got 2nd overall (1)
Started varsity football as a freshman and played every game (2)
Started left forward on the state champ soccer team (3)
Won district in the 400m track, went to state, team second again (4)
Started football as a sophomore played every game, made playoffs (5) [he’s the #1 player in his position for his age of n the country]
Quit soccer and track, picked up tennis and helped his team win state for the first time since 1999. Also won state in boys doubles. (6)
