living in a cheap apartment in a questionable part of town

Did you never have your kids over at your apartment? That's part of the struggle for me. I kind of want to go cheap for a while and live cheap and save, but I feel I have to have a decent place for the kids to stay over.

I don't know what that particular agreement is, but for the most part, Louisiana has favorable alimony laws. And child support is based off salaries. In fact, I paid more in child support because I didn't think the legal amount was enough. I had more money post divorce than when I was married. But, my exwife worked and did just fine.

You are way over thinking this. Do what’s best for you financially. Maybe find somewhere in a great location for the kids, like next to a big park or that has a pool in the apartment complex. Something they will enjoy and remember. Something stupid small like within walking distance to a strip mall with an ice cream store you go to every weekend you have them.

My dad was Air Force and we moved something like 13 times in 17 years. We lived in some great places and lived in dumps. As a kid you don’t feel ‘trashy’ or poor you just laugh and enjoy it. Old school things you never see anymore because only poor people have them can be fun for kids.

I got the house. Kids are with me full time. I pay jack shite in child support or alimony. I had to pay her half the equity in our house, but that is it.

Very possible. This wasn't planned.

I'm more concerned about "safe" then "trashy".

Everyone in their low 20s doesn't live in dangerous areas. There are plenty of cheap places in safe areas.

There's a lot more affordable options out there you just have to look. Most newer apartments are aimed at young adults because that's a majority of their tenants.

But there's a lot of apartments out there that have older people, divorcees, retirees, etc. You just don't really see them or find them until you fit that group and look for it.

My MIL lives in a typical "divorcee" townhome complex. I swear 75% of the tenants are recently divorced and the other 25% are trying to get their life together somehow, many of them are grad students with young families for instance.

You can buy a house with interest only loans for as long as 15 years. Just pay interest, no principal. We did that. $365k. Financed $300k. Religiously,we took the principal amount every month and invested it in an account dedicated to the house. When the loan came due, rather than do it again, we paid cash for the house and had another $300k+ in the bank from just those investments. Not sure that was the right call, but it brought peace-of-mind, I suppose. Now, the house is worth $650k and we have nearly an extra $400k to boot from the investments.

It's not for everyone. You take a risk because the monthly rate on the loan can fluctuate.

Why would your kids care about an apartment? Have to do what's best for you to get things rolling again

This guy is right. People think rentals are just what’s advertised or the big names, but I lived in various random private rentals my entire 20s and they were all in desirable areas and super cheap. You just have to drive around and look for private rentals.

Hell, I rented a 2 bedroom home on Hundred Oaks with a fenced in backyard and wrap around deck for $850 from ages 23-25. Neighborhood kids playing, neighbors who watch over your place for you, etc. It was like owning a home.

We have a new neighbor, a divorcee with one kid. It's a $450k house, and she just got a brand new "deluxe suv" that sits in the garage next to a "luxury suv." She has been remodeling the house piece by piece. Today, she is clearing trees to make way for a pool. She doesn't work. Maybe she won the lotto, but she wouldn't live here. I know what the husband does for a living, and I can't see how he can afford to live after supporting all this?

You seem jealous AF of this lady. How do you even know it ain’t her money that bought it, hmmm?

ETA Have you and this lady been chatting over the fence? You seem to know a lot about her.

I bet she posts here.
