People have been asking for this for awhile and it makes sense. Splash Mountain only exists in it's current form because it was cheap for them to repurpose old animal animatronics from another show to make that ride cheap.
Disney clearly wants nothing to do with Song of the South and Princess and the Frog allows them to change the ride on the cheap again. I've never liked Splash Mountain and it is pretty new, so sentimental value is almost meaningless there. Disney is in the business of welcoming everyone, so it makes sense to go with something that does that better and they can do it with a cost savings by picking a theme that goes with the ride in it's current form.
Princess and the Frog isn't a terrible movie and my daughter looks forward to a ride with what she calls the "Beignet Princess" so it's got our vote.

TBH, I’m surprised splash mountain kept “the song of the south” for this long. I’m sure there’s a ton of kids that asked their parents after the ride, “What movie was those characters from? I’ve never seen that one.”
Parents - “Uhhhhhh”
BTW: Princess and the Frog was a pretty good movie.

A lot of parents these days might not even know what it was from, my wife had no idea. It kinda disappeared in the mid 80s. People born then are getting closer to 40.

Disney needs to expand their parks to add more capacity anyway. Should've just built a brand new ride themed to Princess and the Frog instead of rebranding one of their most iconic rides.
I mean, it’s not the first iconic ride they’ve rebranded within the park system.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was rebranded in the 90s. A ton of stuff in Tomorrowland in the early 00s. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was changed to Winnie the Pooh (I think).
It honestly needed to be changed a long time ago. It’s not like the movie is popular among the parents or kids going these days.

I'm still pissed with the changes to Red in Pirates of the Caribbean, this is a nothing burger in comparison to that. frick Jack Sparrow too.
Mr Toads is a big loss too. Snow White is another loss. Both are still in Disneyland though. Splash Mountain is not even in the same realm as those two as far as iconic and they changed them.

Doesn’t Snow White have the mine train?

Good. The theme was stupid and unrelatable for kids today. Should have done a Moanna theme though.

You can hate Disney for the overcrowdedness, but if we're comparing it strictly to other theme parks, what is better?

I guess. It was one of my favorite rides and relatively the same as I remember from going as a kid to how it is when I take my family now.
I still don't see how the Louisiana swamp fits in with the theme of Frontierland. Would have made more sense to leave the Frontierland version in Disney World alone and to re-theme Splash Mountain in Disneyland. Disneyland version is in Critter Country but close to New Orleans Square. Could have rethemed part of Critter Country into a New Orleans Square expansion and a Princess and the Frog themed Splash Mountain would have at least fit in with the theme there.

Even song of the south isn’t racist. Unless any preindustrial representation of the south is “racist”.
Uncle Remus was a classic collection of stories.
The man won an award for his portrayal. He was the damn hero.
Yeah I really don’t understand that label it gets. Kind of reminds me of people that claim Blazing Saddles is racist when really the black sheriff in that movie is essentially Bugs Bunny.

I delete every mention of it on wikipedia and replace it with problem

There are a bunch of “mountains” in New Orleans and the swamps huh?

I wish Disney would just put it on Disney+ . I don't know if it's truly racist or not. But if your views have changed as a company just have that disclaimer out attached to the movie. Don't try to act like the movie never existed though.
The number of people would throw a fit, far exceeds the number of people who would want to see it.

Does anyone know where you can find this movie? I've heard so much about it but I have never seen it.
It was never released on VHS, DVD, etc in the US. It was re-released in the movie theaters in mid 1980s, and it was released in other countries on VHS in the 90s (not sure about DVD).
You can search online and find bootleg copies out there.

It was already in the works to retheme since last year. People can get pissed, but these protest are not the deciding factor in the ride being changed. It just gave Disney an excuse to go ahead and announce earlier than they planned.
