According to Fox 13 in Memphis, at the time Thessing was arrested, he was serving as the lead priest at St. Mark's Catholic Church in West Memphis and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Crawfordsville, Ark. He was removed from his posts while the case was pending.
According to a publication of the Catholic Church, Thessing has been appointed to begin a new assignment in the Diocese of Shreveport. There is no information on what the assignment will be. He will remain incardinated in the Diocese of Little Rock.

Thessing was originally charged with two counts of aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat, or equine, a Class D felony offense. Aggravated cruelty requires evidence the defendant tortured the animals.
According to Kerry Facello, the director of the West Memphis Animal Shelter, Thessing was arrested after her team responded to a tip in February that he was trapping and drowning cats. Facello says they found multiple traps on his property, a large tub of water, and two dead cats in his trash can.
Facello says Thessing would place the cats, trapped in their cage, under water and leave them there for a "few hours." He would then return and remove the trap from the tub, Facello said.

Hate to see if from a "man of God". I know not everyone is a fan of cats but this is on a whole new level.

If they were feral cats or cats that shitheads allowed to roam free......meh.

I have no problems with this priest's actions.

Load them up and dump them behind walmart. I hate feral cats and our Animal Control doesn't give two hoots to do anything with them.. but drowning is harsh.

That's serial killer behavior.

It's one thing to relocate or maybe even shoot but to intently drown it???

He's a homosexual that also has tendencies that point to being a serial killer.

What would this accomplish?
Feral cats are a menace and, if that's what he was doing, then I fully support.
If he was killing pets, then no.
Do cats and dogs get special legal protections? Because if he was doing this to rats or possums, this would not be news. And feral cats are as bad as rats and much worse than possums.

maybe even shoot
Introducing a projectile into the situation will only make things worse.

They must... around here you get in trouble for killing them OR relocating them, while the county refuses to take them if you catch them.
It sucks.. legally, at least where I am, your hands are tied.
I relocated them when we were overrun. Carefully.

Or completely normal and good for the environment and local wildlife. Depends on multiple variables.

So the only way to deal with this situation is to make suppositions and trap and drown cats?

I don't know all of the facts in this situation, so I cannot answer fully what the options are.
I do know that many areas are overrun with feral cats, that spread disease and parasites and kill pet cats and other local wildlife.

I doubt he owns a firearm. Maybe this is the quickest way to get rid of them.
Would you have a problem if he did this to armadillos?

I agree but there's a more humane way of handling the problem once they're trapped. I wonder if he would have still got slapped with the felony charge if he were popping them in the head with a .22 or dunking a trap with a skunk in it.

You probably would have gotten along pretty well with Ted Bundy

I recently shot a possum in my back yard. Had I done that to a feral cat, which is FAR worse of an animal by every measure, I would apparently be a sociopath.

That would be worse for the cat-lady Karens.
