What place? I've never heard it called a "cover charge" and haven't seen a local place in at least a year add a "service/covid" fee. I'm sure it's happening, I just don't eat out as much.
Wasn’t sure how to describe it but Covid fee is basically what it is. It’s sneaky bullshite. These are at places within the DMV.

I’m saying if a restaurant raises their prices, it doesn’t make sense to me that the tip should also increase. This works both ways. If I go to a sports bar and get a $15 10-wing platter, a 20% tip would be $3. If I go back on Thursday when it’s $0.50 wing night, a 20% tip would be $1. That doesn’t seem very fair to the server.
The percentage thing is just a guide.
If I eat out I may just order water. If the server keeps my glass full, and I drink several glasses and the overall service is good; I bump up the tip.
If there’s a special deal, like a free entree for a birthday or something like that, I don’t slight the server. I adjust.

I just can’t justify eating out anymore. Last Saturday I got 4 tenderloins, asparagus, and scalloped potatoes from Sam’s for under $50, opened a bottle of Austin Hope I buy from my wine club for $32 bottle, and stayed in my swim trunks the entire time. That’s easily a $250 meal plus tip anywhere you go.
I’m out.
I’m out.

I'm with you, my dishes are more creative and better prepared than what I get in most restaurants.

I was at Blue Oak and the lady in front of me had issues with the system. The employee "helped her" and selected max tip. I went right after and selected $1 manual entry.
I will give a $1 but not more for counter service. I'm filling my drinks and getting my food. I got coffee and a bagel in the Bywater and the cheapest tip option was 20% and I had to toast my own bagel. I selected no tip.

My weed dispensery has "tips appreciated" signs on every computer. I'm already paying 3x street price for pot. All they do is hand a bag to me. Tipping for that seems crazy.

Went to a concert at the Biloxi Coliseum and they have beer stands in the concourse area. Its aluminum cans in a cooler. Self serve and just walk over to the register to pay. The point of sale screen still asks for a tip on a $9 beer that you opened the cooler and grabbed yourself. All the cashier did was check an ID and open the can's lid
We went to see Winona at the Biloxi Coliseum last year. The TSHIRT VENDOR wanted a tip. Blew my mind.

quote:As a cook I have zero expectations of a host or to-go servers splitting tips with me. Very few places share tips with the kitchen. Dine in or carry out, the job is exactly the same for me. Why would they do it when the regular servers don't? I'm not a tipped employee.
I only leave cash tips. If the host/hostess don’t split it with the cooks shame on them.
But, if you do feel moved to tip the kitchen, beer is the preferred currency.

Ive stopped going to counter places that have tip machines. I can overlook the jars, but the credit card prompt is over the top.
Not me. I have zero issue looking them in the eye as I tip a buck or 2 or nothing at all.

That's a totally different type of establishment.

We only do take out, and if I stay in my car I tip a couple dollars if they bring it out. If not, I dont.

Ah.
I really was ignorant about that. I had always assumed that kitchen and non-wait staff would not be subject to tipping, therefore they would have to make minimum wage.
The only time I ever worked food service was at a family owned pizza joint in Lafayette. They paid me minimum wage, I got to keep 100% of my tips (I worked delivery and kitchen), and paid me gas money.
For a long time I thought it was like that everywhere

We tip well at sit down restaurants ::: decent with pizza delivery which we really never do anymore.
But were I order and you hand it to me? Not in that habit.

You dont tip your bartender?

Why is that good? Do you think the waiters make a lot?
Posted on 9/14/23 at 5:20 pm to Will Cover
I’m old enough to remember when we were expected to tip 10% - 15% tops. If they think I’ll go over 20%, unless the waitress is an OT 10 who blows me under the table , swallows, and talks my wife into being good with it, I ain’t going over 20%.

Yesterday I bought a round of drinks at a bar here in Houston for 4 people. After tip it was $45 (3 beers and a cocktail)

Barring bad service, I will always tip 20% for traditionally tipped services like food delivery, sit-down restaurants, haircuts, and drinks at the bar.
But I will never tip Subway or Sonic. You have to draw the line somewhere. Otherwise, before you know it, every single thing you do will ask for a tip.

I always deduct the tax before calculating the tip. Had a server call me out on it one time. Told him, I’m not tipping you on the tax.

I’m gonna go on the record and say that the Tip Screen on the Smoothie King credit card machine is the worst.
Every time, the cashier has a laser focus on the tip screen, and utter look of disdain when I hit the No Tip button on the screen.
I don’t tip for you pouring a smoothie into a cup and putting it on the counter.
Zero. None. Never.
