ve stopped going to counter places that have tip machines. I can overlook the jars, but the credit card prompt is over the top.
You know if you hit “no tip” or “custom” you can leave them $1 or nothing if you choose.
It also does not show the clerk how much you’ve tipped. At least that’s what one of the managers told me at a restaurant I used to work at. People feel guilty and think they can see it so they tip 15% when they’d normally toss a Buck in the tip can.

If you're leaving big tips on takeout orders, you're tipping before you even know if the food was good or sucked.
food delivery services (uber eats, door dash, etc) are the worst about this. They ask you to tip at the time you place your order. So you're left in this weird spot of not tipping and the driver knowing you didn't tip and then fricking with your food... or tipping and maybe getting horrible service when the driver didn't deserve a tip. When you're already paying a general service fee plus other upcharges for food delivery, having to decide if a tip is justified at the point of ordering is dumb.

I never have understood why the wait staff's salaries are so reliant on the customer.
Because way back in the day, restaurant owners realized they could get away with not properly paying their staff by putting that burden on the customer.

Tipping in restaurants falls for the first time in years. Blame ‘tip fatigue’
In my case, it's more fatigue with the prices. Of course I have full control over that by simply regulating how much I eat out. But when I pay $15 for a burger I am not tipping you another $10 or $15. You are getting maybe $3-$5.

There’s also something messed up about the fact that you’re expected to tip more for the exact same thing just because the restaurant decided to charge more for it.
If I'm at a bar, I generally tip $1-2 per drink regardless of the price of the drink. It takes the same amount of effort to fill up a pint of coors light as it does to fill up a pint of a more expensive craft beer. If I'm at a nicer bar and ordering nicer cocktails, then sure I'll tip in a more conventional way by percentage of the bill, but you're generally getting better service at places like that than a dive bar drinking beer.

I went to the razorback game this past weekend. It's all cashless now and they flip around the screen to give a tip. How about no? I'm not paying $6 for a bottle of water and $5 for a pretzel and then giving you a tip. I walked to you. How about you run outside and play hide and go frick yourself. Not happening.

Don’t forget restaurants are also now adding bullshite cover charges too to avoid raising prices on the menu.
I’ve been to a few the past couple months that have added a blanket 10-20% charge to the order and have it in small font.
It’s a cheap way to raise prices without most people even realizing it until the receipt is there if they even notice it there.

I was at place recently and their card machine tip option started at 20% and went up to 30%. I told 5he counter person that was ridiculous and then selected other and $0.
Proof people just want to complain and be assholes.
All you had to do was select the $0 and go on about your day. Instead you felt the need to be an arse to someone who has no control over what you just encountered.

There’s a place in Baton Rouge that has a 10% tip automatically applied to all to go orders. Dumb

I tip for water (sometimes you have to drive)

What place?
I've never heard it called a "cover charge" and haven't seen a local place in at least a year add a "service/covid" fee.
I'm sure it's happening, I just don't eat out as much.

I'm slightly tipping less, but going out a lot less. The food at most places is now shittier than I make and the service is generally atrocious.

Service has significantly declined in Bham. Even at higher end spots. Not surprised it’s reflected in tips.

Did DoorDash magically create itself out of thin air? You're paying for the convenience of sitting on your couch and having someone bring you food through a $700 smartphone. It is quite the wonder there are fees involved. And frick you, I'm not going to pay an extra $3 a meal so we can be charged the same price so your bill doesn't go through the catastrophe of being itemized.

If you're giving $1 for each $5 beer, you're tipping 20%. $2 is a 40% tip.

Right. I generally tip 20% at restaurants but why would I tip more than a dollar if I buy an $8-9 beer as opposed to a $5 beer?

I only do this if the bartender is especially attentive at a crowded bar. Not having to stand and wait 10-15 minutes to get served is worth a bigger tip
