Tipping in restaurants falls for the first time in years. Blame ‘tip fatigue’

Shoving the display or credit card machine asking for a tip in your face every time you pick up a to-go order can have a negative impact on people.

That auto tip BS at fast food joints.

I never have understood why the wait staff's salaries are so reliant on the customer.

Tips have been inflating for a while for various reasons, one of which is that a lot of receipts will show the after-tax total as what you calculate the tip on rather than showing the sub total without the tax added in.

my favorite is when they ask you to a tip at a place where you order the food when you walk in and then someone brings it to you from out the back. When you order a drink it's self serve, so I have to go refill it.

Starbucks has become the absolute worst at this. I will never ever tip there.

Our past two dining out experiences this week have resulted in lower than normal tips. Absolutely horrible service. One plate came out wrong and a drink was empty and the server was not the one to bring the plates. Never came back to check. I ate an incorrect entree before the food got cold.

Second different restaurant- server was not one to bring plates again. Cocktail glass stayed empty. So in addition to a lower percentage no additional drinks or desserts were ordered (which would have added another $75ish to bill easily). We went elsewhere and had dessert.

The cooks and staff need to eat too. Leaving a ten per cent tip for to go orders seems fair to me.

Ive stopped going to counter places that have tip machines. I can overlook the jars, but the credit card prompt is over the top.

I refuse to tip in any situation when someone simply hands me my food. Tipping is only for sit-down dining when someone waits on my table. I paid for the food. I'm not gonna pay extra for you to hand it to me.

I tip less because prices are higher

I went to a restaurant recently that charged me a 4% service fee for using a card. I tipped 4% less because of this unadvertised service fee.

I'll drop $1 in the tip jar at fast casual if I get good service.

They aren't making any money at $13.00 for a pound of smoked chicken at a bbq restaurant? $20.00 a pound for brisket, $13.00 nachos

come on now baw

I have enough sense to know when to and when not to too.

Pick up orders are the worst.

I do get sick of the constant tip culture everywhere you go

One place I was glad to see add it was sonic

This is a good thing. Not against tipping, but against unnecessary tipping

Maybe the owner should pay them what they’re worth.

Yes, it might lead to higher prices on food, but if we’re already being ethically and morally challenged to “add a tip,” might as well just make it part of the actual price.

It's probably got a lot more to do with rising prices and shrinking budgets. A lot of people are stretched thin these days.

Subway is the worst. The “sandwich artist” just puts my chicken in the microwave and puts a few toppings and condiments on the bread without ever having to take more than 3 steps. The drinks are self serve, so they just hand you a cup at the register. But the credit card reader asks if I’d like to add a 15, 18 or 20% tip.

All salaries everywhere are reliant on customers. (Except for government workers.)

Unless my wife and I are emphatic about where we want to go out to eat then we are just cooking at home. Prices are out of control at the moment and wages aren't catching up any time soon.

The focus has shifted from delivering quality service to earn the tip to now pressuring customers to tip what is expected regardless of the level of service. Not shocking that this is the result.
