This thread would be better served as a check in thread to see who was rejected by their potential father-in-law

No, she'd been divorced so I figured he'd already given it.

I'm not sure any of my married friends didn't ask the father/parents. I know I certainly plan to when it comes time to cross that bridge for me.

I would, she'd be pissed if I didn't

It's called respect for my adult daughters(one day) to marry who the hell they choose to.
Staying classy there mikelbr.

Just be sure to preface whatever you say with, "Not that I give a shite what you say, but..."
that is why i asked for his blessing because, let's be honest, Even if he says no, you are still gonna ask her.

Are you 18? 19? What?
My wife and I were both in our 30's. After she proved to me she'd pretty much do anything in the sack and wanted to have my babies, you think I'm running off to Mormon dad in Utah, "Uh, sir... I don't think I can live another day without your daughter sitting on my face. How about it? Mind if I fornicate with her the rest of my life?"

Exactly why I don't want to be bothered with this old fashioned nonsense. If I don't approve of the relationship it'll be well known before any proposal.

Yup, still one of the most awkward things I've done in my life, even though I was with her 8+ yrs

traditions are cool and all, but I'm kinda glad I didn't have to ask her Dad
she only talks to her Dad about once a year, so I wasn't going to call the guy up out of the blue and ask for his blessing
plus we were both adults, I always felt like this tradition was when people married at like 16 and still lived at home

Because I feel that it's disrespectful to the woman to have to ask her dad's permission to marry her?
This is one of the few things I believe I'm quite progressive and rational about.

We were both in our 30s when we got engaged. I told him it wasn't necessary. Why waste money on airfare to BR for that???

This is a legit reason to make an exception.

How is it a sign of respect when it doesn't matter what the old man says, you're going to married the chick anyway?

I know of a few instances where the father said know, but after some time had passed he changed his mind and they got married. Usually, the father's objections are temporary and based on money or maturity. If the suitor asks him again later after becoming more financially stable or more emotionally mature (or once his daughter has become more emotionally mature), he'll generally relent. After all, he's only looking after his daughter. He's just trying to make sure she doesn't marry a loser.
