I mean, Asheville is a pretty great place, but to compare it to Mayberry is a stretch

Let's be honest. It's money (or lackthereof) that changes people because life is either sweet or it's stressful

Money doesn't change people.
It magnifies who they already are.

I changed from when I'm in college to what I am now. Things in life changed me and I don't like what I am now.
I know I can be who I am but everyday grind stops me.
I blame participation trophies and safe spaces for your problems. Grow a pair and suck it up.

Self loathing is a sign of growth.

You must search for joy. It's out there...seek it and don't give up.
It could be as simple as a garden in your yard, an old car or truck you restore, a child you help to grow into a real human, a volunteer or part time post that helps others.
Generally something outside your vocation to remind you there are bigger and better things than just climbing the corporate ladder.
Or you can always make really strong beer or wine (like me) and numb yourself daily...

Yes.
Used to be a decently nice guy. But after the death of my father at 25 and my two remaining grandparents shortly after that (I'm now 32), I had massive personality change. I stopped caring about others almost completely, took a bitter/jaded approach to everything, and stopped being sympathetic and caring towards others.
Used to want to get married and have kids, now I have every intention of staying single indefinitely.
Probably a good thing that my personality changed. I was pretty soft and kind of a pussy in my approach to everything up into my early 20's. So far I feel like the change life has forced on me has been for the better and made me more assertive, aggressive and independent.

Not many people are the same as they were even 5 years ago. We're constantly evolving. Deal with it.

Volunteer to do something.
Anything.
Anything.

I'm sorry for your losses, but EVERYONE has to deal with that.
