You have officers who pumped 96 shorts into this guy and you are trying to assess the performance of your colleagues as to whether their use of force was necessary , reasonable and proportional. One cop alone fired fifty shots into Reed and now moves on to his next encounter with the public .
This is not good.

Does your opinion change if what another person said, that he didn't fire just one shot, but possibly as many as seventeen, is true?

I haven't watched the video, but if the dead guy fired at police seventeen times, that was a gunfight. You keep sending rounds towards the threat until it is no longer a threat. Seventeen times he fired on police. If true, their response was reasonable.

Don't really care but you can't tell he fired first on that video.

And wtf are 4 cops there with guns out on a seat belt ticket?

If he did shoot first then yeah FAFO

Have you been to Chicago?

Also…shoot at police first on traffic stop. You should be dead.

Even though the dead guy fired first rule of thumb says you should only fire 60-80 rounds in under a minute. Clearly they were way over that in this case.

Which police academy taught you this one ? You fire until the threat is eliminated. I don't know all what happened but the perp shot first, they returned fire, he later gets out of the vehicle. The threat was obviously still there, you just can't wait to see if he will shoot another officer since he already presented that threat.

It’s a rule of thumb, not an academic exercise. This is a real world situation.

Yes, it could change the assessment if Reed fired a bunch of times, because it would show he was still alive and dangerous, instead of, as someone said "hamburger meat" .
Another thing that could change the assessment is the range from which the officer discharged fifty rounds and the accuracy of all of the officers. The issue is reasonableness, necessity and proportionality. If they would not subdue him with 96 rounds from that close, there is another training /performance deficiency you need to be concerned with...

Police don't operate under a 'rule of thumb.' You are trained to eliminate the threat. The typical officer carries three magazines with a range of 13-19 rounds on average (depending upon caliber of weapon). You can easily go thru three magazines in 30 seconds. If you've ever gone thru training scenarios this would be obvious. 99% of the population have never experienced this, thus they have no idea how 96 rounds could be discharged. 4 officers can easily discharge nearly 200 rounds in 30 seconds, as long as the threat was still active.

Which means 17 came from Reed.

I read that Reed's gun was empty and that
he had fired 10 shots.

Geez, you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. The perp was in a vehicle. Have you ever trained shooting thru vehicles ? The materials cause ricochet, thus most rounds if not fired straight thru glass, and not at an angle, will get deflected. Also, even if the perp was hit with several rounds it is not like TV where they drop dead. He could have been hit 15 times and not died instantly due to where he was struck. He kept moving, they kept firing. You also have to take into consideration the angle the officers were shooting from. The engine block also would have taken out a lot of rounds if he was ducking below the windshield.

Watch the body cam video of the cop who was shot. You don’t see much but the car door, but as soon as you hear the first gunshot, he jerks away and yells out.

Again, he reportedly had a ski mask on. He was also on bond for a gun charge from a few months ago.

The car Reed was driving was not listed as stolen, so if it was registered to him, the cops would have known who he was, and had reason to believe he'd be trouble.

I do wish they didn’t use unmarked police cars looking at the video. They probably needed to properly identify themselves as well.

There is almost ALWAYS more to these stories. Police don't pull over perps for seatbelt tickets in unmarked vehicles unless they are undercover and he was under surveillance for a larger crime.
