It's a 1 mile pilot project... You all act like they just decided to convert the whole Detroit highway system.

You all must think new technology just pops out of thin air.

Jeez wonder if it will work as well as the Detroit People Mover, the joke of a rapid transit system that goes nowhere and frequently doesn't go at all.

If you are around any emerging technology, 90%, maybe more is only hype never to be realized

Pull your head out of your arse. It’s a ridiculous project in a shitty town that used to manufacture the entire ICE vehicle industry. If you don’t think this is a political stunt that is wasting tons of tax payers monies then you sir can’t be helped.

It's cool but I'm not concerned. The way things are going we'll never make it to a level 1 Kardashev world, which is the amount of energy we'll need for this globally.

Anyone remember the millions that Obama gave to his buddy in the corporate shell solar business. How’s that working for LA? How many people besides the wealthy that have any solar at all in this state.

I wonder how much power is lost/wasted with wireless charging?
They claim it's over 90% efficient.

How much charge can you get driving 1 mile?

It depends on how fast you're going. At 100 mph you get 10 times the charge as you do at 30 mph. It's science.

I think they've achieved a rate of 70kW at a speed of 35mph. At that speed it would take 1.7 minutes to travel one mile, during which time 2 kWh would be put into the battery at 70kW. For a Model 3 2kWh is enough for about 8 miles. Pretty badass.

Of course the testing was probably under close to ideal conditions, but if real world rates are even 1/10th of that you could drive forever over charging roads. That would obviously be cost-prohibitive, but it's neat that it's a possibility.

I can't say that it will ever be common to have wireless charge roads everywhere, but this is proven technology and at the very least it will be common in the garages of EV owners. I can also see it becoming common in parking garages and places with drive-throughs.

Well, if they aren't paying taxes anymore and they are driving on the same roads they have always used, they need to be paying taxes.

So, slot cars. Who's going to clean the corroded contacts?

The key word here is "wireless", there are no contacts. The coils get covered with asphalt.

I understand that.

But 1 mile, 10 or 50, everyone with a modicum of common sense (and rudimentary observational skills) knows what will happen to this.
