I had a white truck at the time and lived around LSU. I got a lot of looks when they still thought it was a white dude.

I was managing a fitness club, and one of the victims had been a member there. There were many times that undercover law enforcement would come in and “work out” to see if the killer was possibly a member as well/look for tips or leads. Particularly in the evenings, we’d walk females back to their vehicles. I remember females all over the city were very worried for their safety.

I remember one of the stories was Derrick Todd Lee following a lady home one day, she called her husband to be outside when she got home and Lee pulled into the driveway of a house down their street and the husband confronted him. It was months later they saw his arrest on the news and realized what was taking place.

I remember the story of the older man he did a few odd jobs in the past for coming home and finding DTL in his kitchen, at his home north of Zachary. I can't remember all of the details, but IIRC the man had him at gunpoint and the SOB said something along the lines of "Don't shoot! It's me- Derrick!"- which didn't explain WTF he was doing in his home when no one was there.

Good chance that bastard broke in looking for his wife (she wasn't home, thankfully) and didn't expect the man to show up in the middle of the day, if I'm remembering the details correctly.

Hindsight being 20/20, too bad he didn't shoot his arse the minute he walked in, as it all turned out.....

I stated doing some research after reading other thread about one of DTL’s victims house being for sale. I remember hearing about it while it was happening but being a kid I was pretty naive to what was truly going on.

What was it like around Baton Rouge at that time? Were people really paranoid or was that exaggerated? Did any of you with a white pickup truck get strange looks? Any other interesting stories pertaining to DTL?

I'm friends (college friends, but we see each other every few years or so) with a victim's boyfriend at the time. They probably would've at least gotten engaged since they were both at that age you start thinking about marriage.

You see DTL's criminal record before he started killing and you wonder why someone didn't put him in prison for life based on what he'd done till that point, then you wonder how we've made it this far as a society, then a bunch of other things.

A psycho female co-worker at the college radio station we were working at called in like every male employee to be swabbed. The FBI or whatever authority it was actually followed through with one of us, who did actually got the description and drive a white pick-up truck.

We visited a few times during this, and you could feel the tension. I am not sure if they ever found the reason behind the darker hair preference, but I remember a lot more blondes and less allowed dark roots in those already bleaching hair (or whatever does that).

Did they ever find out if he ever pretended to be a delivery person for mail or something else? Maybe having wrong address or lost trying to find correct address to deliver and then asking if person knew where the address he was looking for.

I believe he identified himself as some sort of utility worker. What’s bullshite is recently an electrical contractor showed up at my house unannounced and got straight up shitty on the Ring cam that we wouldn’t open the door for him. It was a legit sub from GA Power doing an unscheduled meter update, but that’s a great way to get your arse shot.

When we did later schedule the work, we were told power would be out for no more than 5 minutes. Power was out for hours and the a-hole just straight left at 5:30 without answering his phone, nor would his company answer. Also a great way to get shot.

I think it varied. I seem to recall he was a cable person at one time, though I can't remember.

I was just starting my career in BR at the time. Every woman I worked with was scared shitless. I was scared too because I had to leave my wife and infant son home alone at night sometimes. We both grew up in the country and she was armed to the teeth and knew how to use it. It was a very weird time to say the least.

Maybe I was drunk, but going to LSU at the time I really didn't follow it until it came to a fevered pitch the last few months when it was the talk of the town. It seems like it was kind of a slow build up as the police began connecting older murders to the newer ones.

My roommate worked part time for O'Reilly auto parts on Essen or Staring in between classes. When they caught DTL we ran his name in their computer system and there he was. He had made purchases of simple car things while the hunt was on and the other co-workers remembered him coming in.

I was going to summer school and living in Bengal Apartments in TL in summer of 02. Lived by myself. Had a glock by the bed and a bat in the corner by the bedroom window. Never knew who was prowling around Tigerland.

Diane Alexander, one of his victims who survived, said he knocked on her door and asked for directions before forcing his way in. I think he was somewhat large in stature, so if a woman has a door cracked talking to him, it wouldn't be hard for him to force his way in. I also read that he was personable, which may have caused women to briefly let their guard down just enough for him to push the door and barge in.

I worked at the same place he did for a hot minute. Pac Tec in Clinton. He just shortly after I started there. I could still tell something was off about the dude. The other black guys that worked there talked often about how weird he was

TLDR: He basically bashed her head in, stabbed her 81 times and cut her throat so deep it damn near decapitated her. Unknown if he raped her before or after she lost consciousness/expired.

I'm glad they left out what he took from his victims as a trophy, I was told that was never made public knowledge. Won't specify because I can't be sure if it is true or not, just something I was told when we evaluated him.

Well damn Psych. I kinda wish you didn't mention it now. Morbid curiosity is fully engaged.

I was in college at LSU… stopped running around the lakes for sure. White trucks always caught your attention. It was very unnerving.

I remember during the trial or whatevver the defense tried to argue he was mentally handicapped and the advocate headline was huge print on the front page.... 'DERRICK TODD LEE RETARDED" probably shoulda saved that

He did have an IQ below 70, though he wasn't evaluated expressly to determine that, at least from what we were told. He was evaluated for a possible history of traumatic brain injury which the defense wanted to use for mitigation in sentencing.
