Y'all may just have some shitty plans because my plan is great. Two cleanings and checkups a year, and basically 50% off any major work that needs to be done. And even more off fillings. In fact, I may not even pay for a filling.

I save A LOT of money using dental insurance.

I don’t believe that there is any standards on fixing a cavity. It seems that any size cavity, or radio luminosity on the x-ray warrants a filling, for the theory that they will all continue to grow and end up needing a root canal. But we’ve all heard stories of people who needed fillings from one dentist, then another dentist saying you don’t have any cavities. for sure there are risk of getting fillings, it weakens the teeth, and increases the chances of cracking, possibly more than the cavity. So how about at least let’s chart the growth of this cavity and see if it’s actually growing.

I would say about 30% of patients floss on a regular basis. That combined with the horrible diet of processed foods and soft drinks. So once you can detect it on x-ray it’s only going to get larger for 99% of people. When dentists watch these areas they are usually watching it go from small cavity to crown/ root canal to extraction over time.

Do you brush your teeth regularly? That helps a lot and won’t cause the need for fillings.

One local dentist told me I had 10 cavities. I sought a second opinion only to be told I had none. 15+ years later and I've only had one major dental issue due to my wisdom teeth growing funny.

I guess guy was just trying to pay an expensive mortgage or something.

Child dentistry is. I know someone whose dentist made them get 6 crown on baby teeth.

Just... pull them. They are baby teeth.

the tooth is the one human tissue that cannot repair itself when infected. Once you have decay, a cavity, it will only get worse never better. The issue is, is there decay there or not and an unscrupulous dentist will find decay where there is none.

Maybe for you. Just cleanings are about $900 yr for my family of 4. My insurance covers them 100% and I pay a $378.04 a yr for insurance. They also paid 70% for my kids braces and about the same for fillings and crowns and such.

dentistry is probably one of the reasons why people live much longer than they used to.

A good dentist is worth every penny IMO.

I've fired my current dentist. Long story but he basically fd up one bone graft and almost fd up the second bone graft. The endodontist I went to didn't think the dentist could put an implant in place of my bottom left second molar. Lost confidence in the dentist and went to a board certified oral surgeon. He said putting an implant in was too risky and he wouldn't do it. That second opinion saved me about 5000 dollars and convinced me that my dentist was a hack who didn't deserve another nickle from me.

I think there are people that just suck.

I had a dentist say i had a cavity and needed a filling. i got a second opinion from my uncle and he said I didnt. So i changed dentist after that.

My uncle lives far away and i dont go to him for regular cleanings. Just if something extra that will cost me comes up.

Now my current dentist says i brush too hard. Go figure, i clean my teeth too well.

When the hygenist rubbed her boobs all over 12 year old me, it made the braces worth it.

This. Always been interesting to me how oral and optical, or even mental health, are magically not considered “health” as it relates to insurance.

There's a whole regulatory regime around mental health and health insurance coverage.

Dentists are like politicians, Everyone's dentist is good but everyone else's dentist is a scam artist.
