Or at least scam ridden beyond all redemption.

True or false.
I don’t think this but a lot of people say it

If you based it just on the UK, sure.

obviously it's a needed profession but in my area, I'm guessing because of oversaturation of dentists, the office visit is an hour long session of continuous upselling attempts, it gets very annoying

Dental insurance is a scam.

But dentistry is not. Oral health is a big deal.

That said, you have to shop around a bit (particularly in a major metro area) to find one that isn't just trying to upsell you on everything. Found one that I've been really pleased with in the last two years, but had a couple that were ridiculous.

Not if you have kids....

Plus I get 2 cleanings a year, I walk in, never even have to wait, sit in the chair and I'm out door in less than 30 min

At least they keep the reigns tight on accepting people into dental school and not flooding the market with dentists

Law school is the bigger scam

Only if you're an anti-dentite, which it sounds like you are.

Next you'll be saying they should have their own schools

Really depends on what you're having done. I've unfortunately had to have a fair amount of work (crowns, root canals, etc) so it's been worth it given for that.

I think ours is like $30 a month or something and covers two cleanings a year, X-Rays, etc. so it pays for itself.

About 10 years ago I move to a new area I go see a local dentist for the first time and see fancy massage chairs and latest and greatest TVs …. I knew it was a scam. Who ultimately pays for all this crap? The patients.

My guy now is good, but not treating the place like a spa.

Had a dentist once that wanted to replace all of my crowns (four all together) even though they didn't have any damage or issues with them. Then wanted me to consider veneers even though I don't need them (no other dentist has ever even mentioned them).

All together it was going to be like $8k.

In the 1800's the town barber was also the dentist.

That should tell you all you need to know.

I had a dentist once that diagnosed me with a cavity every single time I went in. I never had tooth pain or any symptoms. Never had a lot of cavities before I started seeing him either. In the 5 or 6 years I used this guy I bet he filled 7 or 8 cavities.
I finally was like WTF? and switched dentists. That was over 15 years ago and I've only had one cavity filled since.
It's hard to believe he was running a scam, but man my gut said he was. I guess it never hurts to get a second opinion.

This. Always been interesting to me how oral and optical, or even mental health, are magically not considered “health” as it relates to insurance.

Last I checked my eyes, mouth, and brain were all body parts as much as anything else.

There are a lot of shitty dentists out there, but there are some very good ones. Also, stay away from Aspen Dental type places.
